Not sure if you are suggesting that the videos are fake, if so let me know how you would like for me to prove it to you.

My concern is that we have no answers to what this is, at the end it might end up being normal, but until we get a definitive answer I don't think is wrong for us to worry.

If its a probem, I dont want it scattered all over the highway after waranty ends.

The videos you recorded were on an 80 degree day...now see how it sounds when it's 5 degrees out....very scary indeed.

4runners are Made in Japan and use Japan made engine just like 2 gen Tacomas until Nov 2007. Tundra and Tacoma now use engine made in Alabama.

my point exactly. The 4Runner final assembly is Japan; doubt if Alabama engines are shipped to Japan.
So, again, if the 4L noise is 'normal' it would show on both vehicles - one only assembled in Japan, the other only assembled in N. America (same drive train right down to the final drive ratio). Maybe all 4L's have this problem for '13-14 but doubt it-The quality should be the same.
The obvious point is to stop the dealer BS about it being 'normal'. (Have to resist the dealer insistence that they're different engines - the comparison should be valid.) Perhaps someone needs to check 4Runner forums.....or perhaps the Tundra forums...

I'll chime-in here too. This thread definitely has an incendiary title, and some of the posts reflect our frustration with the process of dealing with this issue--a frustration warrented by the amount of money we put into these trucks. (See my mod list, for instance!) At bottom, though, this thread represents a collective effort to figure out what the heck this noise IS and what it MEANS for the longevity and resale value of the vehicle.

Just like epa4wd said, it may be normal, but then again it may not be. Until there's a clear statement from Toyota I think there's a real need for this thread.

If, for instance, this thread had appeared two months ago, I would have been sure to do a cold-start of the truck I bought prior to purchasing, and I would have found a specific truck that did not present the symptoms of whatever issue this is. Would I have chosen another make and model? Absolutely not.

Not trying to be a douche bag here but Toyota isn't building quality vehicles like they use to. I don't know whats going on with them lately.

My 14 never made that sound not even when started at -30F. I run the usual 87 gas (with ethanol). Still on non synthetic oil, switching to synthetic at the first oil change at 5k...so it's basically how it came from the factory.

I realized this when they ditched lockers on Land Cruisers. They are trying to be like everybody else. Big mistake. On the end all cars can have fancy seats, cup holders or rims. If they want to cater to whimsy crowd, they will have to race to a bottom price. It seems that's what they doing.

Why is this not all over the web if these things are making scary noises? Only thing I see is the Taco tick.

My 14 has 2500 miles on it and has made this noise since day one .And yeah, I noticed it well before I found this thread so...its not just paranoia. My wife pays very little attention to engines and even she noticed it. I live in central Florida so I cant say what it would do in real cold weather but this morning was 60ish and it sounded like a freakin Duramax for the first mile and a half and was almost embarrassing. I dont care what anyone says but a normal engine should not have a metalic knock that goes away once warm, thats just B.S... I have crawled all around this thing and mine seems to be coming from the lower end almost like a rear main rattling. I havent had time to screw with the dealer yet because I know Ill have to leave it. But Ill be keeping up with yalls progress, if any is made, and driving mine till I get a chance to take it in. So good luck and keep the reports coming.

My wife recently noticed a similar noise in her '11 4Runner Limited that we recently bought. Didn't know what to think of the noise as it definitely did not sound normal. Glad I saw this thread though.

Will try to post vid tomorrow.

I am curious, why is this showing up in the 14 engines primarily. What has been changed from my 07 to my 10 to the new 14's... As far as I know its been the same engine from 07-09, then in 2010 they changed some connecters but its still the same engine.

( If anything ) It is probably an issue with one of the suppliers that has a failed process in manufacturing. They will locate the source and find the cause. They will also hold the supplier accountable for the losses of the engines and $$$$ on the time and effort required to track this down. They will also install a system to over check these parts in the future. Trust me it will be painful to the poor soul that caused this.

The recording is fine not everyone gets out of their truck to listen to it run much less attempt a recording. Someone else posted they started a number of trucks they made noise, typical of all engines all the clearances are slack when they are cold they make noise all of them. The Taco engine is a fairly complex engine, 4 cams, non-hydraulic lifters, variable valve timing, etc. and a fan that moves huge amounts of air when it’s cold. Having driven lot of junk over the years the Taco sounds fine to me. Show me a rod knock and I’ll say it’s time to have someone look at it. The tech is going to say “normal” because he has heard it a thousand times and never had to repair an engine to try to fix something that’s not broken.
