This trail is pretty easy. Gets a bit sandy in places and there are 2 water crossings. I'm sure stock will do just fine. I'd like to have at least 1 4x4 with us just in case.
I can't stress how important it is that everyone have a race/ham radio. Everyone needs to be in contact with each other. It's a big desert.

Ham Radio Outlet in Anaheim is your best bet. People in here will let u know what's good. San Clemente is only a little bit further than some of us have to drive.

Cool thanks, gonna have to check it out. I heard HAM's are a PITA to install. So if i can go handheld I'd prefer that.

I'd be down to go! I think some San Diego guys were going to Ocotillo maybe but either way its a 2 hour drive to barstow/ocotillo. I like Barstow a lot, way less busy I feel.

I have fully mounted Icom race radios at the shop, but if you want a handheld, wait a day or so for me to receive my order from Amazon and I'll tell you if it's worth it.

I have a Yaesu FT2900 RE mounted in the truck, and it's perfect for long range (Barstow to Catalina is my record) because it puts out 75 watts.

But if you want a handheld, I just ordered 3 of these last night. 5 watts, long battery life, and they're dual band. You just need to know which freq. to NOT transmit on, because you can interfere with police/fire/emergency operations since the whole band is open to transmit on.

But for $40.00...you really can't go wrong.

Cool! I would like to do a full install but leaving in April so maybe when I get back. Barstow - catalina?? Holy s*** haha.

But I don't know much haha, probably sound like a noob. something about tuning the antenna is a little more difficult than dealing with a CB.

Yeah I just BARELY got into the Catalina Island repeater one day while heading out to Vegas. Had to have been something with the atmosphere that day that helped the signal travel so far.

It's actually easier. SWR on a CB is much more variable and can cause WAY more fluctuations in performance....however, I've had my ham antenna on the bed rail, both sides, front and back, and now on the roof and I haven't had to tune it once.

good to know. I just don't want to drop like ~ $400 for maybe 1 or 2 more outings before I leave for Aussie land. But I can't wait till I come back! the Taco will be getting some major mods!
