If you take the "Northern Route" you should enjoy upper New York state ,then let it flow into Vermont...Rt 4 can be a beautiful ride....from there the "What you want to see" will determine the next "leg" of your trek....Green Mountains ( Vermont), White Mountains (NH) or the "Coastlines of NH and Maine"......
The Boys are very serious about pre-plans, these areas get BUSY for Foliage season .........

    Enjoy your trek...

NSFW rules. That thread was warned quite a few times already. Sucks that it finally got pushed over the edge. Such a great thread.

Time frame has alot to do with picking the right place for peak foliage. Vermont is on of my favorite states to visit, the last weekend in september or first weekend in october is usually the best time to be up there, especially farther north or higher elevation areas. I cant really think of many "must see" spots but burlington is a cool city, lake champlain is really nice that time of year. When i am up there i do alot of exploring on dirt roads and some light offroading.

I am not much of a photographer but here is a few iphone shots from last fall in the killington area, i think we were there the second weekend in october and it was a little past peak foliage

I didn't know you went up to that neck of the woods. I go to Lake Champlain for some camping during the summer also. I have a lot of family up that way and we usually camp on one of the islands in the middle of the lake. I love that area, if there was work up there, I'd move.

I went to school in VT, one of my good friends in college was from the islands north of burlington. I went to VT tech which was in central VT and pretty much spent every weekend in burlington with friends who went to UVM and st. Mikes. I still have friends in burlington. I am up there at least once a year, my girlfriend and I have made it a tradition to take a long weekend for a mini vacation in the fall. Unfortunately i wasn't able to make it up there for snowboarding this winter.

In college I had a bunch of friends go to Middlebury College which was always a blast. Burlington was roughly 45 min north so we frequently made it up that way. (there was a really good brick oven pizza place we used to go to, of which I cant remember the name)

FWIW RT 7 and/or RT 202 going from CT north are really nice in the fall. Route 7 in CT will bring you past Kent falls and then through Mass. Then once you hit VT you will drive more or less through the middle of the Green MTN Nat Forest, then eventually to Rutland. for CT I would say October would be a good time of year to travel and sight see. Good luck on your trip.

I think it's nicer when the leaves have just budded... The green is overwhelming, especially in Vermont. The green mountains namely... On a sunny day the glow is outstanding.

Fall is pretty nice there too actually...

Get yourself some strange in the deep, dark woods of northern New England while you were out?
