I would then expect to hear the noise in all 05+

Stating that something is normal because he has heard it before is not reason enough, if its that normal, common and heard a thousand times, then its reasonable to expect that they would be able to tell you easily the root of the noise, yet they can't.

UPDATE: I received a letter in the mail from Toyota today. They requested my bill of sale, maintenance records, and receipts for anything that I added to the truck as an accessory.

I have a few more to compile, like my LEER cap and remount cost, pinstripe costs, and a few accessories.

Just turned 99,000 miles today. 1 clutch at 43k was my fault completely-trying to be more careful, now.)

    4 years, zero complaints.

    It's almost too quiet.

Steves104x4.... my exact experience with my last Tacoma, that's why I bought another one. I hoped to get the same out of the new one.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
That was you at Como and Transit last week wasn't it? What did you do to your clutch if I may ask. Even beating on it I'd think 43k is too early, no? Just curious.

Yes, that was probably me. If I remember correctly a few years ago it rained then froze the truck to the pavement while parked at work...I'm pretty sure that was when I fucked it, trying to unstick it.

People complain they don't have heated mirrors. Man, I needed heated tires that 2am.

I took mine in to the dealer to get the noise checked yesterday. I got a phone call to tell me that they couldn't duplicate the noise, so they kept it overnight and I was there to start it with the tech first thing this morning (28*F). Like always, the noise starts right after the emissions pump shuts off and remains until the engine is at full temp. The tech said he couldn't hear anything like the noise I was describing and that it was probably the belts making noise because of the cold. They had another '14 that I started and it made the same noise, making it "normal" though not necessarily healthy.

Having been a service writer, I know how frustrating these kinds of issues can be. I don't fault the dealership, and they have treated me very well especially considering I didn't buy my truck from them (finding a manual transmission in Montana is difficult at best). The initial report of the issue is now on record so I'm satisfied for the time being.

The technician's advice was to keep an ear out for it as the weather warms up and bring it back if it gets worse or doesn't go away.

Im a new Taco owner, '14 4x4. Here in Colo it has not really warmed up a lot, and the mornings are still hovering in the 20s to 30s. I have noticed that when I start up there is a tin sound. Like some sort of light metal plate vibrating. Once the engine warms up it seems that the sound goes away. I cannot be for certain and I have a significant hearing loss from the Army. The clip is the same as what I am hearing, and its an odd comfort to see so may others in the same boat. Thanks for this thread and info.

That's troubling for a 2014 unless you've recently changed or topped off your oil and maybe spilled a little bit. I'd be up under there trying to find the source of the leak. New engines should not leak oil.

I love how the fan boys rated this thread as "terrible". I just bumped it from one star to three by voting excellent.

what they should be doing is rating the Tacoma terrible because it has been produced for 2 decades with shitty frames.

All receipts, pink slips, repair receipts, maintenance records, loan papers, and pictures sealed up and sent off to the Toyota Regional office today... we'll see what happens next.

Hotrod, did they ever check your oil pump? I know you got a new shortblock but seeing how common this issue is the new shortblock could possibly have had the same pump issue. I'm asking because I heard from a guy that his pump was determined to be the problem. If this has already been covered then blame it on my rookie status.
