Looking to get an OBD device. Any Recommendations

Hey guys I'm planning on buying an OBD device but wanted some advice on what to get. I was looking at the PLW Kiwi wifi since I have an Iphone but also heard the scanguage is good. Saw some info on a GoPoint Bluetooth as well.

Any recommendations on which you have or tried and what works the best/has the best features would be awesome.

I can vouch for the Kiwi. I've used it on all of my vehicles for the last 3 years with no problem. Though i think they've released a new and improved version since I got mine that has a smaller frame and is compatible with more different protocols and some power saving features. Overall its a great choice

 

Scanguage is good, I currently have an ultraguage and have been happy with it.

 

Actron just came out with one we sell at work. Just leave it plugged in and if you ever get a code that pops up it goes right to your phone.

I wish we could use it in the store. Here go plug this in and it will pop up on our computer screen and we can print it. Instead of going outside in below 0 weather to tell the customer they have 7 codes and they want to know what the issue is lol

 

I bought an ELM327-based wifi connector and Dash Commander. ~$30 for the pair. Works on iPhone and iPad on iOS 7. Scans ECU for supported PID's and you can make your own page(s) of gauges, use the default gauge set and download additional skins. Pretty nice, ultra portable and logged data can be played back offline, though I've not figured out how to import from iPhone to iPad or vice-versa. Exporting is easy though.

I originally bought it to pull codes from our uncooperative Jetta. OK car, code generating mofo. MPG stats are on par with manual calculations. Some stats are real-time, others are average-based.

It's really eye-opening to learn all of the datapoints that are logged/generated. You can paint quite a picture about one's driving habits from this app (time in seconds from 0-10, 0-20, 0-30 and on up to 0-140 I think). Think about what Progressive Insurance is collecting from the folks that sign up for their logger...

The reviews on that one are very weak so I'm not surprised it's so cheap.

I'm looking for something similar to that however and will have to do some research.

 

I've had the scangauge, a bluetooth adapter hooked up with the Torque app on my phone, and now have the Ultragauge. Of those 3 options I'd recommend the Ultragauge every time.

The Scangauge is good but nearly twice as expensive as the UG and it only shows 4 pieces of info. The UG shows 6 pieces of info on a single page and you can program up to I think 7 pages with info, so you could potentially have 42 different gauges. The UG screen also looks better and it's easier to reset when you fill your tank.

The bluetooth/Torque app combo worked OK but (for my phone at least) I had to re-enter the bluetooth code every single time I got in the truck and Torque would eat my phone's battery. Overall it just isn't nearly as easy or convenient to use as the UG (just plug it in and forget it.)

There is a thread on here with a sh*t ton of pictures of mounting locations for the UG. I don't have a picture right now but I ended up putting it behind the steering wheel on the column. It partially blocks the lights on the left side gauge but it's easy to see and still out of the way, plus the wire is hidden in the steering column.

 

With these gauges installed, If a code is thrown can you reset it.
Example - Air Bag light comes on and stays on. If you unplug it with the battery still conected.
Also will these work on my 2.7l?
