News saida load was lifted via crane onto the roof, but it exceeded the capacity of the roof causing it to collapse from the roof (12th story) to the 5th floor

 

The load must have been crazy heavy cause the Q decking holds all the pour weight of the floors. We need an engineer in this thread. Does anyone know where we can find one

That's sad, hopefully they both pull through and recover!

Decking is designed to hold a nice, even, uniformly distributed load (concrete). It will hold a significant point load also but you have to be careful how you load it (it's not as strong as you may think). I'm really surprised to see how far the decking is out in front of the concrete... Usually they're only a floor or two away because the concrete helps stiffen up the structure.

Sounds like a costly oversight, or someone was trying to cut down on the number of lifts and ended up overloading the roof

Good point, sounds like they put a large point load somewhere it shouldn't have been placed. News made it sound like they made the lift, placed the load on the roof, and then boom. Collapse

 

I'm just a surveyor doing the column line control on the decks after theyre poured and up on the concrete core so they can weld on the clips. The gc is JMA. Today the core was on floor 25, steel was at 12, deck 7 was supposed to be poured tomorrow. Im not sure how the scheduling goes but it seems like theyre moving at a pretty quick pace.

Sounds right, moments before they just got finished unloading a tri-axle flatbed full of steel. No room to unload onsite except to lift it up.
