Input needed: PL5200 vs. PL5400?

Hey guys, I searched and read but looking for a direct comparison/review of these specific Pop n Locks from people that have had either or both.

- My Pioneer deck has back-up camera capability although I do not have one (yet).
- I have keys for the truck, roof racks, G4 tonneau, and house key. Would be nice to use the BOLT and have 1 less key.

However, I read the quality of the 5400 is "flimsy/cheap", the lift portion is small, and people have had issues with the locks seizing. The 5200 seems to be more substantial and basically just an "add-on lock".

My g/f awesomely purchased the 5200 for me unknowingly, but just curious if it's the "right" one before installing.

I have the 5400, the handle does feel weaker but I don't plan on beasting it off so we'll see how long it lasts. I moved from Washington to Colorado with it on going from craploads of rain to blizzards and everything in between, and it hasn't seized yet.

PL8521 takes away any issues of flimsy handles or extra keys. Wires into your electric locks and is mounted inside the tailgate. Just to throw it out there.

 

Cool, thanks for the input guys. I agree I have no plans of going Hulk on the tailgate, just didn't know how flimsy was flimsy.

PL8540. Basically a combo kit with the

$100 PL5400 Black Manual Tailgate Lock with Bolt Codeable Technology for Toyota Tacoma

PL5400 and the power unlock/lock actuator. Love it. No seizing, no problem, since installing around the beginning of January.

I honestly think the seizing problem was an isolated problem with some of the first batch of that model. From what I read only 2 members here had the problem, and P&L customer service took care of it.

As for anyone saying its flimsy, agree there but anything aftermarket will be flimsy in replacing something stock/OEM. Have to lose something in able to get something you want.

But anyways I highly recommend the PL5400. It's basic, uses your ignition key, and easy install.

As of now I think I will just hold onto the 5200, seems simple enough.

 

I'm looking at a pop and lock to hook into my remote. I don't have a backup camera, which I keep reading about the electric ones wiring through. If I do not have a backup camera, i.e. no wire to follow, can I still get an electric one?

 

Yes, you don't use the camera wires. Wires come with the electric tailgate lock that you feed from the tailgate to the interior of the truck.

PL8521. It doesn't replace your factory tailgate handle. It's a part that goes in the tailgate that prevents the handle from being able to move.
