Can you use hood scoop for an actual Intake?

Might be a stupid question, but can we use the OEM hood scoop and turn it into a functional cold air intake? Thanks

 

There has been other threads on this. Apparently the scoop is in a low pressure area of the hood, most likely because it was designed for looks and not function. If you make it your "Ram Air" intake, your engine will actually have to work harder to suck air in. You would be better off to see if Volant makes the ram air attachment for their cold air intake.

My son-in-law and I are proud owners of 2 Tacos. 2010, 2011, TRD, Extended Cab, fully equipped. We are always trying to improve on an already very good product but not quite perfect. lol

Was talking to the president of a Toyota dealership about putting the Toyota Tacoma supercharger on my 4.0 l...

First questions he asked was....do you have a cold air intake on your hood. I replied that the hood had a scoop but it was not hooked up to anything. Looks only.

Can you get a Tacoma with a scoop fully functional, I asked. He replied : Sure and he continued but a supercharger will not operate with a cold air intake because it has a mini turbo.

So I ashed ? how much for a supercharger ? 10 minutes later he replied $7400.00 cdn tax included.

end of subject concerning a supercharger.

but, if Toyota as some Tacos coming out with a cold air intake, it must be good for a few extra hp and the negative air pressure is not important ?

Supercharger is not a mini turbo. It will also function fine without a cold air intake. Also to my knowledge no Tacoma comes with a functional hood scoop.

 

Your dealer was blowing smoke. It's always amazing to me how many car salesman are not car people. Who knows, the guy could have been selling vacuum cleaners a week ago.

No Toyota is not, does not, and will never have a functional hood scoop.

Now, there are some slick off-road air intakes from ARB, Volant, and others that cut a hole in the front quarter panel and extend the air intake up higher to avoid excessive dust and water (when you wade through that 3' deep stream).

For cold air intake TRD and K&N make systems for this. They are stealth and hide entirely under the hood. Some folks use them with their TRD or URD supercharger kits without issue (even though it is not recommended).

I have a TRD SC on my 07 and don't see a need to modify the air box, getting plenty of power/performance.

How about embedding some annoying lights in the fake intake? Give the truck a Knight Rider look

 

not sure about gains, but the afe stage2 Si will make that nice little roots whine a bit more noticable.

air wont be any cooler tho.........bone stock intake draws in ambient temp air at approx 35-40MPH as checked with a scangauge2, an ultragauge, and torque app.
NOTHING, short of an icebox mod will give colder air than ambient.

the afe may be better than stock due to less bends, no baffles/chambers/silencers.... take the stocker off, and look at it very, very well. U can see some odd chambers and such that do nothing but cancel noise and disrupt airflow. This is just common now and its to meet the demands of the masses who want a quiet cabin.

In high school I rigged up the scoop in my Ford Torino to function and found that it DID let in air...and rain. The kid I sold it to, locked up the motor in a heavy storm. I haven't messed with scoops since.

 

was it the Judge that had an open/closing (manual) ram air duct?
