Myself (hobbyist) or rbraddock (engineer type) or el tacorojo (professional) and I'm sure there are a few others...

    Our advice will be similar:
220V MIG and buy the most welder you can afford.

Buying a small one will be cool for about two weeks but you will outgrow it rather quickly if you plan to do very many projects with any material 3/16" and thicker (ask me how I know... :frusty: )

I thought it would be as well, but it was actually a relief to start pulling things off.

    Like I said, I'm just a hobbyist...
The Hobart looks like a good option, as is this Miller if you're looking for a multi voltage unit. It is very similar but a couple hundred cheaper.
Keep in mind, you won't be welding 3/8" steel in the 120V settings (not effectively anyway).

I saw that miller during my research and honestly thought it was the same welder just in blue and about $200 more. The main reason i was looking at the MVP was not for the MVP ability but mainly because it is a higher amped welder with that option if need be than the 190 unit for just $100 more. I plan to hook it up to 240V from the start and leave it there. but in case it takes me a bit to get a shop built at least i can tinker around with the 120V settings.

As the new expo guy, Jake planted the seed of an expo run from Calgary to Flagstaff Az. Next summer. I'm thinking 17 days round trip. Anyone else interested?

Would this be fun and adventurous? Sure.

    However:
That's a long way to drive... just to start the adventure and drive some more. 17 days would be about right (4-5 days driving straight to Calgary(2450mi), take your time on the Calgary to Flagstaff route 6 days(1400 mi) and then straight home 4-5 days (2250mi)... you get an extra couple days to recouperate).

Don't get me wrong here, I'm all about cruising the country side. We live on the East Coast, tons of "stuff" to see and do on this side of the Mississippi... Upper NY, VT, NH, MN... Up into Quebec, Ontario, Newfoundland or Labrador Canada maybe :notsure:

Like these guys are thinking for the South East:

    http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=702160

Yes, they did it on ExPo bikes but we could easily adapt or create our own for trucks. If we look a little there's probably a NorthEastern route already built.
