Here’s the scoop. Apparently, Uniden rules especially by number of units sold over Cobra (3:1) Uniden’s are ruggedly built. The better ones to get are PC78XL or PC78 Elite. I’m told you need a good antenna for these units to perform. Recommend a Wilson W1000. Consider magnetic mount so you don’t have to drill a hole through your roof . Hope this helps. What is supertune the radio and antenna? Have you seen how tow truck drivers mount their many antenna's. A bracket like that will help.

 

You the man, Jon. Magnetic mount is a real auto enthusiast’s choice. A true enthusiast will self circumcise himself before he would drill into his ride. They are very anal about their rides. When I was about 15, I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle and I ended up in a ditch and was separated from my bike. All I cared about was my bike as I laid in the ditch while the cow's were checking me out . This is no ordinary bike owner bud. That $50 bike was my 07 Taco back then. When emergency personnel arrived all I wanted to know was, what happened to my bike and where it was. I refused to go to emergency unless the bike came with me. After a few minutes, they were nice enough to cooperate. There I was in hospital with a bicycle beside my bed that appeared to have been struck by lightning. Now that you know I’ve got issues, what made you buy the 520XL? I would like to buy a CB too if I can get a neat concealed installation. More like a piece of emergency equipment. SWR=Short Wave Radio meter? Share your CB experience with us because I drive in the bush where there’s no cell coverage in some spots and could use one.

if u wanna talk far you gotta go with a connex or galaxy radio.

 

Actually, when I was younger I became quite interested in C.B. If you really want to have fun try ham radio. On a 2 meter band & 2 watts, you can talk 50+ miles on fm & use the phone via repeaters. A magnet mount on the roof may be better than mounting to the fender. The roof will act as a ground plane & radiate your signal.

 

The little unidens are fine for 1st cb users or just occasional really short range use. You can by a cobra 25 for it's compact size and have a shop install an oversized final transistor and tune the radio for max power. Radio cost about $70. About $30 for new final and a tune. I think the cobra 29 is still great radio is you just want a 40 channel cb. I prefer 10 meter ham radios with cb frequencies put in. The galaxy 33hp is a great radio. Tune up puts out 40watts. General lee radio kick but also. Put out about 60watts tuned up. The general washington is the same as the general lee except it has an American flag on the face plate in stead of rebel flag for those who mind. These radio are fairly large though. I put a Magnum 257hp in my Taco. Its compact like cobra 25 but it's a ham radio and does 65 to 80watts. Has modern looks and great noise reduction and awseome receiver. Online Gijoes cb shop has best price at$195. $30tune. A great radio connected to a poor antenna is a waiste. Wilson 1000 or 5000 mag mounts or through roof mounts work the best, set up easy and can be unscrewed when need be and the have a weather cap. They work best on the Tacos with plastics beds since you can't get a good ground on them there. I've tried them all since 1994. The little wil is ok for shortrange talking. You'll triple your range with the 1000 or 5000 but the cb radio also has to be good quality. It just depends what you want to do.
