Vancouver riot(s) had NOTHING to do with hockey or the Canucks. The game just happened to coincide with the monthly meeting of the Vancouver Douchebaggery Society. They tend to meet anytime there is a fun event going on.

Saw that on Puck Daddy as well. How can a ref be allowed to call a game his brother is playing in?

I don't pay much attention to them either and believe that a hockey-sense developed over time ultimately gives a fan of the game their knowledge. The article however does a nice job of looking at not only the stat's significance, but also goes into how it reflects on a few particular players of interest. In the end it leaves one a sense that a statistic might actually somewhat reflect something a scout might be looking for in a player. The ultimate 'team guy'.

On-Ice shooting pct ultimately reflects how hockey is a complex team-game and not just an individual sport of goals and assists. The quality pundits often refer to as 'intangible'.

Fuck it, it's too cerebral after a few beers, but if I were a scout, I would be sipping coffee and making some comparisons.

That stat won't win a Cup. Maybe President Trophy at most. Teams need tough buggers that know when to perform, when things are on the line. Kings, Bruins, Hawks have figured that out. They win Cups from being nasty and beating teams anyway it takes.

Of course a stat will not win a cup, but if you understood the essense of what was parlayed in the article you could easily apply it to analyzing toughness. There are good tough players and there are garbage tough players and we all know this to be true. II suspect those that play on winning teams are typically better players than those that aren't. The idea here is that this can be discerned when you look at On-Ice pct. It allows you an idea of how a team performs when a certain player is on the ice and not just an individual himself.

Advanced stats are stupid. People who follow then said the leafs were the worst team in A the league and would be all year. But yet they hovered around 10th all season. Because there's too many split decisions made in the game, and goals can come within 2 seconds of a single mistake

Your thinking is very black and white Homer. All statistics are merely a reflection of what has already happened and can be a guide to future possibility. Obviously they are not a crystal ball. Stats that include team performance are simply of interest because hockey is obviously a team game. As is clearly pointed out, OV continues to throw up stellar individual numbers year after year, but when you look at the stats that include those that surround him a different picture comes forward. He appears to have a negative impact on those around him.

I use to like advanced stats and still think is a different approach but it has little barring on hockey. It never will

There's "zone starts" and "quity of competition" that I got into last Nov to explain why Torey Krug won't be a Calder finalist. Oh one more thing... See this site?? http://www.shiftchart.com
