I'm a little late to the party since it is already fixed. With it being a 2014 I would have demanded a brand new trans and not a reman unit. I will bet you that they put a reman unit in it. Do you have the part #? If not, call and get it. Tell them you want it for your records.

I have never used or installed a reman unit from Toyota and I'm sure they are rebuilt very well, but not on my brand new 2014.

Not knowing the exact configuration of your truck, this might be the reman unit they installed. This is the V6,4WD part #.

That is correct they are mechanical lifters with valve clearance. This is why they "tick".

I hope they flushed out the transmission cooler or some of those particles will come back in the transmission on the first startup.
Time for a redesign. Seems like a lot of major issues popping up with the 2013 and 2014 models.
If I had a major problem with a new truck I don't think I would ever like it or trust it again. I don't think there will be any major changes until the 2016 model comes out. I wonder what problems we will see on the 2015 models?

Why would a redesign be necessary on a proven unit? It's not like these things are failing right and left it's not a Chevy after all.

From what I can see the 2014 uses the same trans assembly meaning they call for the same part# going back to 7/2011.

Make sure they flush all the lines and cooler and I'd be asking for a NEW unit not a reman.

OP - did Toyota give you an extended warranty? If not, you may want to ask for one.

I had to return my truck with less than 250 miles on it due to a faulty ECM and they gave me a 8 yr 100k comprehensive warranty for my trouble.

    Can't hurt to ask.

Kinda worrisome isn't it? Especially hearing that Toyota doesn't verify fluid levels. Something so simple that can cause a lot of damage.

Glad they fixed it up OP. Keep an eye on it though in case something further down the pipe so to speak is the culprit.

 WOW, sorry to hear this.
I also have a 2014 with just over 3,000 miles, no problems with the trans.

The equipment that builds these proven units are old and have much wear and tear. If the equipment is old and sloppy so will the product they produce if not maintained. Maybe I should not compare with Ford but that is what seems to happen to them at the end of there model cycle which is only 6 or 7 years instead of the 10 years currently with the Tacoma. Even with some of the problems I have to agree they are far superior to a Chevy. I would rather push a Toyota than drive a Chevy.

Interesting point. Usually people trust the end of the model cycle because they have all the bugs fixed. We just have to hope they keep their machinery new and in good order.

I have more trust in the mid years of the model cycle. I have owned a lot of new trucks in my lifetime and they always seemed to be the best.
Back in the seventies I was a mechanic for a ford dealership. The 76 model trucks with the 360 and 390 engine used a lot of oil and had a lot of engine noise. The new short block Ford sent for replacement had cylinders that were over bore. Pistons were a little sloppy in the cylinder. These were new and not reconditioned short blocks. Guess what? Same thing. Ford said it was old engine molds. In 1977 they changed to the 351 engine.
It was hard to get the customer to believe that he was better off with a reconditioned short block. We offered a 390 replacement instead of the 360 and they went for it. Problem solved. Cured the oil consumption and noise.
This is why I believe Toyota has went a little too long on this design. Molds are wearing out. They should at least put the 4Runner in them as they are a newer design. They have cranked out a lot of good 4.0s in the past 10 years but time catches up.
Just look at the last few years. Shudders-vibrations , bad cold engine noise - and now transmission problems. This is not like Toyota. I still think the model cycle is too long.

Some of you guys need to remember how many Tacoma's are sold each year. How often do we hear of transmission issues with Tacoma's, much less any Toyota model? I will take a Toyota/Aisin made trans unit over any other out their.
I have had close to 12 Toyota or Lexus models since I started driving over 30 years ago. I have only had 1 model with a trans issue. Currently I have 3 models in my driveway with total mileage over 600K. Not one issue with a transmission.

Wanna know how serious Toyota takes a transmission problem while a vehicle is fairly new? I have worked for 2 auto manufactures. Toyota and Chevrolet. I know, big difference.
When Toyota would have a trans issue you were instructed to remove the tranny and overnight it to Japan for inspection. They wanted to know WHY this transmission failed.
At Chevrolet we employed a full time tech just for transmission replacements. GM replaces these things like brake jobs.

    Just my .02 cents.

The mold doesn't wear out. And wouldn't make a cylinder over sized anyway. The cylinder bores and bearing surfaces are machined after the block is cast etc... I am sure that the bores are held within the micron range of allowable variation.

I work in automation maintenance in a world class automotive supplier and we have CNC Machines that are 20 years old that maintain machining clearances within a couple of microns.

The machinist that is running the machine will make a bigger difference than the machine. Shit machinist = Shit parts.

I watch a ford engine assembly video in school, it stated they measure their engine clearances to millionths of an inch.
