you can always get a snatch block if you get a small winch... it will half the line speed but double the pulling power.

so an 8,000lb with a 46ft/min line speed would be 16,000lbs at 23ft/min

It will halve the line length as well as the line speed, but I don't think it's ever a bad idea if you have enough line for it.

I could be wrong, but I also don't think it's ever a bad thing to have more than necessary when it comes to power in a winch.

I suppose you could pull something apart or bend stuff with too much pulling power but if you were stuck to the point where pulling you out would bend stuff, what else are you going to do?

I have a warn M8000. It's an 8000lb winch with 100 feet of steel cable, and I have a snatch block. I'm looking into getting synthetic line though for safety reasons.

true... though having a 16,000lb winch on a Taco is overkill and a waste of $ and weight. I'd not go over 10k on a taco... but that's just me

yeah synthetic is good stuff, though I've heard if you wheel in areas where it's it's really rocky and there are a lot of sharp rocks... you can't beat the durability of cable. personally, I'm going to be buying a M8000s or at least like you an M8000 and swap over to synthetic

Warn 9.5xp on the 3rd gen 4Runner. It is ropeless at this point due to being in the middle of a rebuild. Due to water intrusion and me not reading the instructions for feet forward mounting the motor rusted up. I think I'm getting a trail gear rope rated at 18klbs from LowRange OffRoad.

The 1983 pickup has a old 1980s warn 6000, so a 6klbs winch. I think the serial number put it at 86 or 87, it was not really clear. It works great every time I have needed it. I recently switched out the cable for the rope that was on my 4runner. I purchased that rope from OffRoadSolutions, it is a RockStomper rope.

Both ropes I will be using are Dyneema rope. http://www.dyneema.com/americas/applications/ropes-and-lines/maritime/tugging.aspx . I have been happy with that rope, it is over 7 years old without any issues. It looks weathered but still pulls strong.

Just look for a rock saver for your line. I bought a recovery kit from Master pull back in 2008 and it came with one. It's a 3 foot long shell of some kind that you put over your line to keep it from harm.
I don't even know if they sell the kit any more.

I have a smitty built 8k winch. But when I flopped I must say the 12k waren that Jace had made quick work of flipping me over from up the hill at a long distance.

It pretty much is what all winch rope is made out of. Dyed different colors for different manufactures.

Floats, strong, durable, what more could you ask for? It is rope that is built to be strong in a small package (meant to surpass steel cable). The original manufacturer built it with the intention of using it for/on boats but it can be used anywhere. Being that is was built to be a cable replacement makes it perfect.

We were there for hours flopping your truck back over. You were in shock. :p

Just kidding. But in all honesty Jaces winch does perform very well.

Most new ropes have a rock saver on them. The Viking line I have and the Trail Gear line that Brian mentioned both come with a 5' rock saver that you can slide on the line to where you need it.

Mike did you install your rock saver on your line yet or can you put it on while winching?

Thanks everyone for the tips. The rock saver tip is awesome I would have not thought of that. And I guess most run 8k winch. And if it can be afforded get a synthetic line. Thanks again all.

I would check out Badlands winches at Harbor Freight and go 9000. Price is cheap and they have been getting decent reviews.

Considering what the sugar mama is going to let me spend and what I can manipulate her to let me spend. I'll be looking at all my options. Thanks.

This is the rock saver, it's made of some kind of thick nylon and velcros over what ever line you need to cover.

Not a bad set up. Have you had to use it yet? How did it perform?
