120Hz LCD TVs - AMAZING!

One of my buddies just bought a 55" Vizio LCD with the 120Hz frame rate. All I have to say is "WOW!" I have an older Vizio - 2 years - and it doesn't have the "smooth motion" technology that makes Blu-Ray movies look almost 3D like you can just walk through the glass.

Pretty amazing! I thought about upgrading my 3 year old Samsung DLP rear projection with one of these. Now I see the LED ones with the 240Hz frame rate! Just can't keep up with the technology.

Anyone out there have one of these higher frame rate TVs?

 

I don't really see much difference. There is no more additional information in the signal, so it is just flashing the same image 2 or 4 times as much (compared to the old standard 60hz) which is still flashing the same image 2-3 times, because there is only 24 fps from most sources. Blu-ray might be a true 60hz signal, but I don't think there is any readily available source material that is in a faster format.

That being said, the LED technology, especially organic LED does look better than it did even a year ago.

 

I have one. It's all good on like the 360, sports, and new movies, but when you want to watch an older movie, it sucks! It looks like you're actually there, which takes away from it.

 

Good to know...thanks for the info. I do have a 47" Vizio and I haven't hooked up my PS3 to it yet to see how it looks. I wonder what the difference is between a LCD 1080p 60Hz and a rear projection DLP. I guess I'll find out soon.

 

Resolution being the same, the only big differences are viewing angle and rainbowing.

 

It is good to have an LCD with 120 Hz over 60 Hz because the refresh rate is an integer value of 24 Hz (film fps). Having an integer value of the source refresh rate eliminates motion judder.

 

That's what I've been reading, and if you can get the 24fps set up then the Blu-ray movies almost look like they're coming from a camcorder. I think it's pretty cool, but was really weird when I first saw it...blew my mind!

You can get a Panasonic plasma 50" for much less than the LCD 120Hz flat panels and not have to worry about motion judder while getting true blacks. Tempted to get a Panasonic, since I've been reading good things about them.

I wonder how DLP compares. It just seems like my Samsung DLP is not using the full features from my PS3.

 

My samsung has the 120hz and blu ray movies are SWEET. When playing baseball games on there with the 120hz set to med or high gives the three ball effect when watching it, kinda sucks there.

 

I've read that that's where the plasmas are the strongest...they are very good for fast motion, while the LCDs have to rely on higher frequencies, but also need more technology to provide true motion (that's probably bas vocab for all you videophiles out there, sorry).

It could be that the signal from your source is not quite at 24fps like the Blu-ray movies are, so it has to fill the gaps with a duplicate image. Say, the source is outputting a frame rate not divisible by 24. At least, this is what I've read.

 

Yeah there is a huge diff between 60hz and 120hz.

 

I don't know, I can watch a blu-ray movie and it looks so good I wanna reach out and touch it, the games however on the PS3 are not quite there. Also the baseball game is made for 720p so running it the way I am is not the best for it I can't wait to see some games that can take advantage of the full capabilities of the T.V and blu-ray.

 

I'm jealous! I don't have the "reach out and touch it" feature on my 60Hz LCD. Lame.

 

Yeah i bought a Sony XBR4 with 1080p and 120 hz about 2 years ago and have loved it ever since. Back then it was one of the first to come out with the 120hz and everyone kept telling me it looks to real, and they didn't like it, until football season, then they changed their minds.

But those new 1.5 inch thick 240hz LED TV's are the heat, the picture looks so damn good.

 

i have a samsung 1080 60hz, amazing tv for hd cable, but i have a ps3 and the blu rays need a faster refresh. blu rays still look great but sometimes you can tell. overall great tv. wish i could get the LED tv

 

I have a 36" CRT with 1080p. It has the best picture I have seen but is a BEAST! It is 30" deep and weights 330#.

We want to move the TV downstairs but it is more difficult than moving a refrigerator or couch. It actually becomes part of the decision in a remodel. As in, we want to move it downstairs but may buy a new TV instead. It's that BIG!

Great TV though - no burn in, true blacks, perfect side viewing, no pixelating, no maintenance, etc.


The TV I would look at is the Samsung 52" Touch of Color LCD.

 

Just saw a 55" Panasonic (G10) plasma at Best Buy for $1499. I heard the plasmas are pretty good, especially with handling fast motion. They also have darker blacks. Been reading good reviews on this particular unit.

 

Plasmas take up WAY more energy than a LCD...Arent they being outlawed in CA or something like that because of the energy consumption?

 

My brother has a Samsung LCD 1080p with 120hz and it struggles with fast motion.

You can especially see it when watching sports (football or hockey)...the picture gets real pixalated. It's still a damn good picture though and you really have to look at it closely to see it.

The best characteristic of an LCD TV for its motion clarity is its response time, not its refresh rate. The lower the response time, the better.

It is difficult to compare LCD's response times because manufacturers skew their numbers. A gray to gray response time is useless. Also, an LCD with a good response time for white to black may not have a good red to blue response time. It is best to look for response times that are characterized as typical.

 

I have two samsung lcd tv's a 52" and 40" for the bedroom, both with 120 frame rate..these are the best tv's ive seen..they will blow vizios away
