So here is the start of my new write up- I have poured over all the resources listed and will try to acknowledge the wisdom of many users in my project-
Shout outs to: Dibble9012, Jerez, Billyjoe, fbconvert and all the others who have refined this knowledge!

Here is a quick rundown of my plan:

    2012 Tacoma O/R non-JBL converted to 2012 JBL/Entune/Nav headunit

My truck has the XM satellite/bluetooth/handsfree/steering controls/backup cam already installed-

the following parts i have ordered to make this plug and play:

    2012 JBL Headunit Entune/nav
JBL subwoofer with amplifier (2005+) more on this to follow
    JBL 6x9 front speakers
    JBL 6.5 Rear speakers
    JBL front tweeters
    OEM GPS antenna
    2013 Toyota Antenna adapter
    Toyota/lexus USB retention adapter AX-TOYUSB
    scion 20pin + 8 pin to 28 pin adapter Pt546-00120-CH
    Metra 71-8113
    Metra 70-1761

    Plugs:
    S23, S24 (JBL AMP)
    R17 (VIDEO input)

My goal is to make this plug and play- and to utilize the 2005+ JBL amp which does not have separate tweeter channels - this may prove unsuccessful and require a change, wait and see.
2012 non-jbl (missing info on plug next to 20pin connector- msg me if you know it)

I will try and post pics as i go along

Update- my wiring harness is nearly finished-
this harness has male connections (just like the back of the 2012 stereo marked audio in pic) and bridges it to the r16 plug on the JBL headunit along with sends and returns for the jbl amp
using 18 gauge wire. Since i am not interested in huge volumes/power i figured using the factory wiring to the speakers would be sufficient and this is a plug n play solution.

in the schematics for the radio/amp wiring, the ivo+/- wires are shielded and the audio signals are also shielded so i completed the shielding process (several websites show how) by wrapping the wires in several layers of PTFE tape (teflon tape) and then an aluminum self-adhesive tape (ie for sealing ductwork) which i then connected the shield wires to the aluminum then more layers of PTFE tape, followed by a electrical tape wrap

this should provide clean signals to the amp

i'll post a photo of the finished harness when i am done
(still waiting on terminals/plugs for the amp to arrive)

    Quick update-

waiting on correct terminals for the amplifier plugs then i can start the install but here is the back of the jbl unit

you can see the radio adapter (i will remove the blue power antenna lead) and the usb adapter and the gps antenna along with the scion 20 + 8 pin to 28 pin harness

    update-

plug and play wiring harness is complete
    [IMG]

this end plugs into the headunit r16
    [IMG]
and the non-jbl factory female connectors mate to the new harness male connector (metra kit) - the white wire is 14 gauge power to the amp and i am still trying to see if i can wire it to the factory 'radio 2' 30 amp circuit

this end plugs into the jbl amplifier and sub (also a ground)

    now onto the test!

    SUCCESS!

    so-
everything seems to work but i have a few bugs to work out...
especially the fact that my gps antenna is a pos
but the rest of the unit functions as it is supposed to

    and it sounds great
did not have to cut any of the stock wiring and i was keeping my fingers crossed using a 2005-2008 jbl amp with the 2013 radio but it works and works well
i connected the amplifier power to the stock plug on the left side of the drivers kickpanel and it uses the factory 30amp fuse (radio2)

thanks to all those who have worked on this
and i highly recommend this mod- but double check your wiring- i had a shielded ground that wasn't connected and without it i got no sound

IMPORTANT- do not make the mistake i made- if you are going to do this- use 22gauge wire for everything but the speaker outs from the amp (use 18ga) and the power to the amp (14 gauge)

now that most everything works- now i just need to find out two more things

where did the usb wires connect on the 2012 non-jbl unit? (ie which plug connector)
and what part number for oem nav antenna

    quick update on USB port-
i completed the USB cable mod listed on this forum to cut down a usb male to male cable and then connected the end to the entune unit via the toyota usb adapter
i made a 5 pin extension for the aux audio using a cut down usb motherboard header connector and then some spare pc fan pins soldered to the other end of the wires

i had originally tried connecting to the wire that led into the multimedia ecu located on the passenger side behind the glovebox but this gave errors on the usb drive and killed one of my thumbdrives

Where did you get the GPS antenna? That is the last piece I'm missing for my entunes to 2011 jbl tacoma swap.

So I got the GPS antenna to work, but not with the first one I bought on eBay so I'LL post the link but I found mine via another members recommendation link to eBay. Total cost was around $450-$500 for me and since I don't have an engine app for my cell phone most of the apps don't want to work.

Also, I can adjust the volume of the nav voice prompts but when I try to increase the volume of the cell phone it won't increase, just stays on the same level regardless of how many times I press the inc button... I have to sometimes turn the stereo volume up a lot to hear the phone call. All told I am happy with this though

So what I have a 2013 non-jbl/entune (base touchscreen) want to upgrade to Entune/NA/JBL HU but I do not have the subs/amp. Is this possible to do without the sub/amp? The Metra plugs fit but the wire colors do not match? I am not sure how to wire them up? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is what I have so far:

    1.2013 JBL Headunit Entune/nav
    2.OEM GPS antenna
    3.Metra 71-8113
    4.Metra 70-1761
Not sure about this? do I need this? Toyota/lexus USB retention adapter AX-TOYUSB scion 20pin + 8 pin to 28 pin adapter Pt546-00120-CH

Just want to chime in here, as this is what I'm working on as well (2013 Non-JBL to 2013 JBL Entune Navi)

The USB Adapter and 20+8 to 28 is NOT needed, the USB is plug and play, and same with the 28 pin adapter. Both plug right in! The only changes that need to be made is the SPD wire (Purple?) from the 28 plug has to be spliced to the Amp as well.

I believe the Amp MUST be wired in for the HU to work at all, otherwise a JBL bypass kit may be used? Anyone else want to chime in here?

    Hi,

I know your thread's a little bit old, but just for completeness I think that 16 pin connector you were unaware of was for the Sirius/XM radio tuner.

I don't remember since it's been years since I've installed it in my Scion, but I think the cable itself comes with a car-specific "fit kit" that you get for the XM tuner.

apoteker, I know this post is old, but wondering where did you get the blank plugs from? I need a male r16 plug and female audio plugs as on your non jbl radio.
