I have an odd little chirp in neutral. It sounds like it is coming from the belt area. I can not seem to isolate it.

The odd thing is that it only occurs when in neutral with the clutch fully out. As soon as I depress the clutch even the slightest, it goes away.

It does get faster with engine speed. It is completely gone when in gear.

Any ideas? Sign of bigger issues? Do I need to dig for it or turn up the radio?

    Thanks

You could try removing the serpentine belt and running the truck for a short time for diagnostic purposes . That would eliminate all moving parts at the front of the engine but from your description , it sure sounds like the clutch release bearing or Throw out bearing as some call it .

The throw out bearing is a possible cause - there was a TSB on it once upon a time...

So having read up on the TOB and tried the belt, it sure looks like that will be the culprit. The URD kit sounds like the way to go with these, but I have not found any long term reviews of them. Does anyone one have one? Like it? Worth it?

The truck has 140k on it at this point. It seems like everything is going at once. The cats are going out, shocks, tires, TOB, coil packs, etc. I guess if I get through this round of headaches, it will be good to go for quite a while longer.

    Thanks for the advice.

TOB would be it. I had the URD sleeve kit installed about two years ago. Wonderful. No issues. I would go ahead and replace the clutch, flywheel and any other parts in there while you are at it, even if they don't really need it.

That chirp annoyed everliving f@*k out of me

    Probably around 30k

I'll have to try and figure that out. I bought it a few years ago off e-bay. I have not been able to find another one since. I kind of like it that way, hadn't seen another one like it anywhere. It was chrome, but I had it powder coated black. I can't remember what brand it was.

On a side note. I also put in a URD short shift kit and a shorter shift lever made by a TW member (Coupe). Both helped shifting tremendously.

Is this something any mechanic can do? An at home project? Who installed yours?

    Thanks

I had mine installed at a shop. The trans needs to be dropped (obviously), exhaust needs to be moved and a cross member taken out (IIRC). The guy who did mine runs a shop out of his garage. He really only preferes to work on Toyota Manual Trans, which worked out for me. He charged me $300 to install the new TOB sleeve replace the clutch and have the flywheel resurfaced.

If you have the means for doing all of that, go for it. I thought that job was a little over my head so I paid to have it done. I'll stick to oil changes, brake jobs and things like that, simple stuff.

I think I can do most of this with a weekend, but my concern is the press fitting of the sleeve. I am not sure if that means a hydraulic press or a block of HDPE and judicial application of percussive persuasion. I have to pull the exhaust anyway for the cat replacement.
