    they sink the ship to float the platform over the deck surface, and then pump out all of the ballast water to raise the ship back up for transportation

    That's a gravity based structure, which I haven't had the pleasure of designing. We don't get too many icebergs in the gulf, and we also don't have a rocky sea floor to put them on.

    Our platforms are all held up by friction, or buoyancy.

    Where are you planning on working? Traffic on the north and west sides of Houston are probably the worst, assuming you are coming into the downtown area, or anywhere inside the 610 loop.
