Is it definitely coming from the driveline? My first thought was it could be warped rotors/bad brakes if you only get it when slowing down. Get them checked just to be sure even though you ruled it out.

 

Can you feel in the the steering wheel?

 

I'm betting you have some heat warped rotors, not uncommon at all on tacomas, especially 1st gens..

 

Warped brake discs are usually detectable by pedal feel. If you are confident in your observations, it may be axle wrap. Check leaf U-bolt torque. It should be over 73 ft-lb. Many are undertorqued from the factory.

Is there a difference in the shakes if you engage 4WD?

Is there a difference if you slow down by engine braking, without touching the foot brake?

Go to another dealer? Another way is to ask the mechanic to ride along as a passenger while you replicate the problem.

my '05 did that, scared the crap out of me because I had a road trip in the next few days. Mine was warped rotors, I didn't feel anything in the pedal. and it was only slowing down from non-city speeds

 

My 2008 rotors were warped early in life and come time to replace the brakes (around 80k) I tested for shutter again and realized it was nearly all gone. I replaced with Brembo blanks though anyways...

 

Power slot rotors & lifetime ceramics FTW....

 

Brembo blanks for muddy and dirty environments... IMO

I have a '12 with 30xxx miles and have the same issue. Had my rotors and brakes replaced and still have the same problem. Mine seems to happen right at 30 mph when decelerating. My next thought would be the driveline but i am not quite sure

 

Should i first drive backwards & blindfolded into on coming traffic before or after....????...

 

Its a diagnostic procedure to determine wether the issue is related to the driveline or brakes .
