    Yea Nick no problem.

I'd say just get in there and do it. I'm not at all and you can't be shy. You gotta go for and ask for the sale. Figure out what trips the customers trigger and use it. Something like only 10% of those that walk after you make contact will ever return.

There are books, webinar & seminars you can attend. I did them & I'd recommend them.

You also need to qualify the customer. Can they or can't they buy the vehicle. I tried to work that in early without running them off. It gives you a clue first if they're even able to buy and second what price range. Trust me, it's easier to up sell then down sell. In other words don't put them in a 4 Runner Limited listed at $46k and then find you can't get them financed and then try to sell them a base model for $32k. After a ride in the nicer unit it's not often they'll go for the cheaper unit. Of course the customer needs some interest but, your gross and therefore commission may very well be better on the overall cheaper unit. And it may be a matter of being able to get an ass in the seat or not.

I completely get the "be honest" part. I agree to be honest about all that you can. As for suggesting "husky" floor mats instead of the Toyota mats, be careful. Suggesting that a potential customer buy ANYTHING outside the dealership can get you fired, depending on how strict the rules are. Just be cautious. It has been commonplace for a dealership to hire a "fake" buyer to test their salesmen. Be honest, but be smart.

It's not so much about being too honest getting you fired, it is about taking money away from the owner. Look at it from the owner's perspective. Would you fire an employee if he was costing you money? I know I would in a second.

I see this as an opportunity to work in a field loaded with interesting experience. Something about years from now being able to say you were once a car salesman is pretty awesome.

    Ouch!

As a former Toyota salesman myself, I wish I felt that way.

Only benefit for me (that I see anyway) is that it helps negotiating a purchase.

I spent over 17 years in the retail automotive business. Started as a salesman and then worked in F and I the last 15 years. 9 of them with Toyota.
I can tell you that everything I learned about selling came from my experience in the car business. I would hire an ex car salesman any day of the week, knowing the type if "boot camp" they went through.
I am now a VP with a large remodeling company, with over 40 salespeople working for me. My experience in the car business put me light years ahead of anyone I have met that has had a non car lot sales type job.
I made a very good living in the business, but yes, LOTS of hours invested.
I say go for it, you will learn an invaluable life skill: selling.
