About a month ago I started hearing noises from my drive shaft so I talked to some people and decided to grease my drive shaft. Well this solved the noise problem for about 2 weeks.
Then it came back again so I just regressed it this time with better grease, 3 days later it was back again.

I hear the sound when on the gas, sometimes coasting and when i come to a stop. The noise also speeds up as I speed up.
I can put the truck in neutral and give it some gas and no noise.

There is no spinning looseness in the shaft but I can move it up and down about a 1/4 inch at the carrier bearing. I dropped the carrier bearing about 3/8 of a inch when I lifted the truck.

What do you guys think it is?
    Thanks!

There shouldn't be any vertical movement in the bearing. It sounds like yours is bad.

One sounds like a lower pitched metal on metal sound but sounds like its just one place on the drive shaft maybe? Its hard to explain, gonna try and post a video

Sure it's the driveshaft and not some dried mud/rocks stuck between your rotors and dust shield? Seeing the mud on your frame makes me think it could be that. Happens to me any time I go through thick mud. But if you said you greased the driveshaft and it went away, I doubt that's your problem.

I have the exact same sound intermittently... I'm thinking it's the carrier bearing as well because all of my u-joints feel solid.

Its not, all my wheels have been off since the sound started and she's had several pressure washer baths since then too.

Yeah, I'm thinking either that or something going on with the rear end

Let me know if you get it taken care of any time soon. Im having to wait on my dads tundra to get out of the shop for a bearing in the rear end before i can put mine in.

Sounds to me like a u joint. Grease them until it comes out of the seals. But do one at a time so you can eliminate each one.

I've greased my u-joints and checked for play in them. It didn't get rid of the noise at all for me at least.

Mine hasn't done it for a few weeks now. It'll do it for a few days then go away.

I'll get the carrier bearing replaced either way to see if it helps. 134,000 miles on it should warrant changing it anyways imo.

Yeah, I'm over 175000 now and should probably do it anyways. May just change all u joints and carrier bearing together but I'm not sure if that'll fix it, I'm really hoping its nothing to do with my rear dif.

Depends on what brand you get. Anywhere from $60-$140.

Same for u-joints. You can buy Duralst u-joints for $17 a piece at Autozone.
