    The manufacturer recommended oil for my truck is 5w-30, so using 10w-30 on an engine with 134,000 miles on it sounds reasonable to me. :notsure:

    Think of it this way. Your could weight is the first #. So you just made your oil thicker while cold. But while warm they are the same (second #).

    A heavier cold weight causes more wear where as lighter warm weight can leak more due to faulty seals at old age.

    I know this. Thicker oil also has better sealing abilities. This could go either way. It really just comes down to preference and the temps the vehicle will see.

    That's my point. Why make it thicker while it is already cold where it's less likely to leak but not increase the warm weight where most engines spend their time.

    So you only decreased the "leak" while the engine was cold

    True, but if the the vehicle doesn't experience cold temps then it's pointless.

    For our area I can see how a 5w-20 would be best (since it's the smallest range)

    But at the same time my vehicle has been from -5 to 118 degrees. So like I said, it all comes down to area.

    Also I have to say ambient temp is not the same as oil running temp. There's a huge difference until you start running huge coolers (which are meant to keep temps down from turbos)

    Haha okay, not trying to sound rude. Genuinely interested. Might switch to 5w-20 next oil change. Too bad I didn't get to test this in the really cold temps. My motor did like to hard start in those temps compared to other vehicles. Even with a high amp battery.

    To thin of a oil in a warm/hot environment would break down faster than a slightly heavier oil.
    And real thin oil doesn't lube as good as heavier oil (to a point)

    I'm as interested in it as you. Each engine along with its pump had its own flow characteristics they design for a certain weight I believe but a lighter weight (from my experience has never done any harm)
