Just watched it as well. How does that even happen? Over torquing lugs?

The episode where they are in Wyoming was pretty good. Had to have been a PITA taking that trailer up the switch backs.

Especially when they're switchbacks that are designed to be reversed up.

Eh, the switchbacks are not what they used to be. They cleaned the trail up quite a bit since I ran it 7 or so years ago. During the Wyo meet the guys did it easily where as my father and I were sketched out on ATV's. A bunch of jeeps made it up with no issue and only a few of them were really built up. I am upset I didn't take them on now.

you sound like you have a lot of experience.;)

Just sayin....I've been in a situation more than once that 8 Maxtrax weren't enough.

You're welcome to come show me the errors of my ways, but I don't carry a torque wrench in my trail tools.

I am no different from a lot of people that wonder about all the gear and equipment that the XO guys have that rarely gets used and how they seem to back away from some challenges far to quickly. But leave the web wheeling out of it. Unless you were there and can comment, there's no point in criticizing.

Well, yeah - I kinda do.. I've half-assed a lot of repairs and recoveries..

I agree, who knows what actually happened - I wasn't there, and I can't watch the video because I'm currently in the middle of the Gulf of Alaska.. So everything I've said thus far is conjecture based off of what other people have said on here..

Guess I'm more interested in how they used the Maxtrax's for a tire rotation.. Did they rotate their tires in soft mud?

Didn't mean to bash anyone who doesn't carry a torque wrench; I'll throw my shop one in my truck when I'm going out. YMMV.

I keep one on my rig too. Craftsman digital one, but still a torque wrench. Then again. I keep everything to disessemble my truck on board.

Anyone running synthetic winch rope.. Take a gander at this link:

    http://www.samsonrope.com/Documents...pe Selection Usage Retirement_MAY2013_WEB.pdf

Was recently in contact with one of Samson Rope's lead engineers regarding repeated failure of their ropes on one of our winches; it was suffering from catastrophic failure far below the minimum breaking strength, turns out a multitude of factors on our end were putting far too much shock loading on the rope, leading to failure.

Granted the forces typical much less in vehicle recovery.. But, synthetic rope DOES store some kinetic energy. Bottom line. Just because it's synthetic rope doesn't mean it's safe to stand in the kill zone.

Definite experienced slight pucker factor being at the operating controls of a 75k Lb. hydraulic winch and parting 1 1/8" control cored/Dyneema jacketed winch line..

I keep the basic essentials in my rig all the time.. Nothing super crazy, and nothing that I'd be upset about having stolen or loaning out. This is where Harbor Freight shines IMO..

The best things by far are Knipex Cobra Pliers and my Bahco crescent.

I'd really like to run the Morrison Trail with ya; went through WY when I went cross country last winter - just didn't have time to do any side trips..

    Possible Alaska trip next year..

Most the time I just forget to put the tools back if I took them out or something. I don't really worry about stuff like that very often and glad I don't. Ill just walk my happy self back home:laugh:. I will have plenty of time to kick myself and reflect on my decisions. Most wyoming folk are super nice as well and will have no problem lending me a hand.

If you can swing by this summer I know Blackdawg, Sconniehailer, and I are planning on running it again. Any time you come through though I can probably find the time. No job while in school and missing a few classes never killed anybody.

i usually carry the entire workshop with me when i wheel. hate being without the right tool for the job. I even bring a welder when i wheel alone.

I've had the pleasure of overseeing synthetic line testing being performed. at a manufacturing facility that my company purchases from. we pulled apart multiple sizes of amsteel blue line and plasma line. Even though i knew to expect the recoil at the moment of failure, it still surprised me the first time. while synthetic line is safer than steel, it is by no means safe. anyone who says synthetic line just drops to the ground when it breaks is 100% full of it.

Speaking of synthetic line, anyone have any insight into the following: Superwinch on their website says something to the effect of only winch drums made of a certain material, and certain winch insides are actually compatible with synthetic. They claim that other manufacturers don't tell people this which can lead to failure of the synthetic line. They specify you can only use synthetic on their top end models, as opposed to other manufacturers who make no such claim. Anyone care to weigh in on this? This marketing, or something to actually pay attention to?

    From their website:
"Warning: Synthetic rope cannot be used on this off-road winch. Synthetic rope can only be used on winches with steel drums designed specifically to withstand the rigorous forces created-by synthetic rope; for example the Superwinch Terra Series, the Danny O'Day S4000, the S4000SR or the Talon Series. In addtion, the heat generated by the brake which is located inside the LP Series drum exceeds the heat limitations of Dyneema synthetic rope. Many of our competitors will sell you a winch with a similar brake in drum setup with aftermarket synthetic rope and will not warn you of the damage which may occur to the winch, rope, vehicle or injury to the winch operator."

The energy has to go somewhere... Winch line is winch line, treat it all the same imo. Bet it was cool to see some testing!
