Probably the worst is,,,just turning around out in the wilds. You back around thinking all is cool,,then find your stuck. You have a 2wd locker,,but no dice on traction.

Carry a spare cell phone batt,,or get out and pull winch line.

Or,,you could pull a lever, pop up and out, then return lever to 2wd. Away you go.

Prerunner is going to be cheaper to operate as far as mileage, wear and tear, ect,,,there is that. Hell, I 2wheeled for a long time with a MitsuSport D-50 2.6 that was gifted to me by granpap's. Just know your limits ahead of time if you decide to go that route. Carry enough gear to be able to get out.

4WD for sure! Locker is not a necessity. I have it on my 13 and have only used it once when pulling my boat out of a steep, dirt launch. I didn't even need it then, just used it for the sake of using it.

Get the 4x4. 4 wheel drive should be a standard feature on ANY hunting truck. Getting by with a prerunner is like going hunting with a pistol. It works fine in ideal conditions but it's still a handicap. My thought was since I don't go out for the sole purpose of wheeling, if I end up putting it in 4hi, chances are I had to out of necessity. There have been plenty of late nights of my driving out of the woods, so glad I had 4x4 because spending an unplanned night in the woods isn't always so fun.

Edit: just realized he was asking about TRD, not 2x4 vs 4x4. Go for it. I have been in and out of 4x4 in both my 2001 and 2002 hundreds of times. I can count how many times I've turned on my rear locker on one hand and still have a couple fingers left over haha.

Lol thanks guys. I'm gonna go with a 4x4. There are just so many prerunners for sale in my area.
After seeing that picture I'm just gonna go with the non TRD to avoid the women lol.

Same basic shit everybody else had 5 years ago.
I have an 03 double cab TRD 4x4 that I bought new. The only thing left that is TRD is the locker and I still modified that. If and when I buy a new Tacoma it will be a base double cab 4x4. Go base and build it if your plan is to start modifying things. I don't know about 2nd gens but if you had the locker you had a smaller ring and pinion in the rear.

The difference in the ring and pinion size is 1/4", and I have never had a diff failure on my 3 TRD Off Roads (300,000 miles overall).

I think the OP is going with the non-locked 4WD truck... I am happier to hear that over getting a 2WD locked truck. :D

That's right 8.0 vice the 8.4, no issues with mine ever but I don't do any super crazy wheeling. Yeah unlocked 4wd vice locked 2wd.........any day IMHO.

BTW, the so-called 8.4 axle is stronger because of the bearing cap/truss and larger diameter pinion gear shaft, not because of the ring size ( both are 8.0" ).

So you have to wonder if it is weaker, why is the 8.0 in the stronger, locked, OFF ROAD TRD? Didn't the 8.4 end with the 2008 SPORT TRD LSD run of 4 model years?

Maybe it's still there, and they chose to not label it as such. Just spitballing along,,Hell I dunno.

They are both really tough setups, so long as you are sane.

I have seen the TRD LSD rear end take up around 700+ hp of screaming revs, and live to do it again. A medium built FURD 9" can take around 800hp,,but for a bucket load of less cash because of the aftermarket.

Yeah, don't always want a ride off into the sunset...when just a ride around the block will do.
