02 tacoma

Hey all

I'm new on here and just wanting to ask a few questions. I'm lookin into gettin a 2002 tacoma 4x4 4 cylinder 2.7 liter 5 speed transmission with 183000 miles. My questions are what kind of gas mileage should I get? Also how many more miles could I expect to get out of this truck? I have a 02 silverado right now but it drinks the gas only getting about 11-12 mpg. I know any truck is not the most fuel efficient but I use a truck bed and 4wd a lot so need some sort of truck.

Gen1 Tacomas end a 2004 with Gen2 beginning at 2005 and newer. I have the same engine/transmission as the one you're looking at and get about 21.4 mpg on the highway.

These trucks will easy last past 300k miles if taken care of. Look at the typical things in a used vehicle but also check the frame for rust around the rear spring mounts.

 

Oh yeah forgot to add it's been certified rust free at a toyota dealership an sprayed to prevent rust

 

^ that's a positive but double check often before and during the winter months.

find out what fluids were changed, if they need it do them:

trans
oil
diff/transfer
coolant (maybe)

other maintenance items like belts, timing belt, air filter, etc, etc

My wife gets 23 mpg. She has the same truck, but an automatic. You should be able to get the same or better.

I've gotten 24 with a v6 prerunner doing 60 the whole way . You should be ably to squeeze that out of the 2.7. Welcome . Also 188k is kind of high, but you should see plenty more miles if the truck was cared for. 300k out of a tacoma is pretty common I would say. The guy I got my tacoma from, his neighbor had a 4runner with over 300k, an it was still running fine. 2.7 has a timing chain instead of a belt, so that's a big plus.

 

He wants 7500 for it. What would be a good price for it

 

Not knowing everything about the truck your asking about I would say 6,000 to 6,500 would be more in line with what it's worth.

If it's been taken care of well the mileage which on many other vehicles would be excessive is not as big a deal.

 

I paid $5900 for a 99 v6 auto prerunner w/ 147k to give you a baseline. Everything is base model except cruise control, running boards, tow hitch, and bed liner.

 

Price seems a bit steep. I picked up 96 4x4 w 2.7 auto and 217,000 for 2800.00 2 yrs ago. 6000 -6500.. Rust free ok. Are you buying from a dealer? I will say that you should be able to get 22-24 if you are running 60 and not to hilly. I had same set for 17 yrs. Chances are it has 358 gearing, so stay close to stock tire size to get best mpg. Also if truck has been taken care of,300,000 is totally reasonable.

 

Well you just said it. 96 4cyl 217k vs 99 v6 147k. I think you found a great deal, but in my area, $5900 usually buys you a single cab 2wd with the 2.4 and 150k on it. So I feel like I got a great deal. The newer 4 cyl automatics should have 4.56 gears. Might be 4.10 if a manual. I think they did away with 3.58 in 97

 

So is 6500 the absolute most I should I pay?

 

If it's a reg cab I would say yes. More for extended. But also there are options we don't know about. I would check blue book value

 

I agree automatics came with 4.10, 4.56 but he sad 5 sp. Likely he is 358. Door jamb code would tell exactly. I would not pay more than 6500. myself. Don't know any real history. And yeah, 2800 for my truck was because the previous owner didn't have a clue.

I doubt that truck has 3.58 gears. It'd be a pig. Only way to tell would be the door jamb. Look like a nice truck, 6500-7k would be max I would pay

looks like about 5800 for a "clean" 2002 according to Edmunds (which I've heard a lot of dealerships use as trade-in value)
