Can you recommend a gas can?

hey guys,

I am going to be making a 2000 mile trip while towing a 5000 pound trailer. I already get crappy mpg on the highway as it is, and, with the trailer, I will get 10-12 mpg. so I wanted to give myself a little insurance by bringing along a couple of 5-gallon gas cans. I tried searching on Amazon for an inexpensive gas can, but I cant seem to find one that has good reviews.

can anyone recommend a good 5-gallon gas can for filling our trucks?

Metal for sure! Sure they cost more, but I've never had one leak or release vapor. I've also never had a plastic one that didn't leak. I have 2 5 gallon Just rite cans that I use on trips up in northern Maine and they are awesome...and they don't tip over like the plastic cans. I think Eagle is also another good manufacturer of good metal cans. The metal cans also have longer flexible spouts that fit easily into the gas fill tube opening.

Just my 2 cents.

Scepter MFC plastic cans have none of the issues you mentioned above

 

Did you look into the VP Racing Jugs? I sell them constantly at the shop I manage, nobody ever has any problems with them.

I've had the opposite problem w/ the metal cans. I have('d) the 5 gallon "Jerry" cans that I would use on a rack on my Jeep. It had the metal spout that was flexible and would screw into the can after removing the metal cap. I always leaked using the metal spout and there was always some seepage from the metal cap when the gas would heat up and expand.

I've been using a plastic 2.5 gallon tank w/ a built in spout and a trigger/lever in the handle to open the spout. I've been very happy with it. The spout is always connected and pours well w/ the extended snout. Easy to control and you can stop the flow quickly by releasing the trigger/lever. And so far have held up fine. Not going to outlast the metal ones but the metal flexible spout begins to break at the flex joints and was always difficult to manipulate.

I also purchased a plastic tray that would hold two of the plastic tanks w/ a storage tray between the two. It keeps the tanks upright and in place when in my trunk and there was room for a roll of paper towels, additives, etc.

It's just like this one. You can turn the spout over the can eliminating it's need to be over the edge which helps with space.



Although it was difficult to find in a Google search for this thread.

There's been some new laws or regs regarding gas cans that really seem to have upset some frequent users. This can my not be 'legal' anymore. Not sure, but I like mine.

Eagle is made in USA, JustRite is made in China (if that matters to you). I can confirm that the flex nozzle end will fit into my '05 fill hole. The brass end is tight, but I can see if one isn't careful it getting jammed in there by accident.

I can also confirm that unless you are actively rolling your truck over, this can stays where you put it. The wide base and lower center of gravity help. Also contains fumes (hence the safety), when you pull the handle back to open the spout, it also vents the can. Pricey, but I was getting pissed with the ones you can buy at Wally World or Home Depot breaking, or worse yet, spilling the gas when you pour.

I I've ever used are the normal plastic gas cans you find at Wal Mart. Never had one leak before.

I plan to get a couple Rotopax gas cans for my truck. They're expensive, but nice.

Rotopax makes some cool stuff. Not any more expensive than jerry cans. Plus they make locking mounts that hook to the bed rails in our Tacomas. They are perfect for travel/offroading trips. Not a cheap walmart can though.

 

Agreed. I've never seen an issue with these "jerry" cans.
