the hubs wants to buy a used 2012 Doublecab with 74000 miles on it. Its Toyota CPO, but I am worried that there are no service records the dealer could provide. About 2 years left on the power train & it is priced at blue book. Not sure if this is a good investment despite Toyotas reputation, but what do I know. Please enlighten me! TiA!

why not buy an older model, 2008 or something with similar miles...

I personally would stay away even if it was a decent deal

If you have the VIN go on toyota owners website and run the VIN, if there are any service records (that for some reason the dealer didn't want you to see) they will be in the "service history" tab.

Being that it's CPO, there is an additional 2 years making it 7 years or 100k miles on the power train. He's ready to buy but it makes me feel uneasy that this truck has been driven so much in less than 2 years and no service records to prove it's been well maintained. Sorry I'm not able to find the link right now, but it's listed $300 below blue book at 23K. My husband thinks that most used vehicles will not have service records. I just don't think it's smart. I just feel guilty I said no.

I don't know if i'm the exception, but my truck had service records up to ~90k miles (it has 104K on it now).

The only official service records on my truck are the floor mat recall and the spiral cable recall.
I bought the truck in 2011 with 53k on it, I now have 107k on it.
Oil changed every 5k with synthetic and a Toyota filter.

Just because the service was not performed at the dealership does not mean that it was not properly maintained. We've had more than a few members report that dealer service was not done properly, including one recently where the oil was not put back in, "auto parts store" filters used, etc....

I kept service records on my car. He explained that there would be no electronic record of maintenance if oil changes were at Jiffy lube or DIY. I agree but aren't there trucks out there with service records? Would you buy a used truck with that many miles without them? I know the Tacoma is quite special & is really in a different class, but do you overlook those red flags?

Honestly I don't know, my sister has a 2008 pre runner that doesn't have any service records since the owner bought it with 2 miles.

There may (possibly, i imagine it's pretty rare) be DIY reported service, if you have a toyota owners account and do your own maintenance you can go on the side and say what you did at how many miles with what parts.

Never even noticed the ability to add service.

I'd stay way from it. just get a new one for a little more money and one that has a warranty.

Ok likelihood that owner who drives about 3000+ miles a month has time to get oil changed every month and a half???

I put 125k on my '03 Tundra in 3 years and never missed maintenance, including changing the timing belt, and upgrading the steering rack bushings to urethane.
I put 45k on my '06 Duramax in 2 years and never missed maintenance.

Those who drive a lot for work, or who simply have a long commute still get days off work.

Keep in mind that a 2012 could have been sold as early as August of 2011.
    2.5 years = 30 months = 2500/month = 600/week

That's not unusual in some areas. My daily commute is 90 miles round trip. Throw in a vacation a couple of times a year and it adds up.

Well OK maybe not new but not one with 74k miles on it! Look for one with 40k and under!

My cousin has a 2005 pre runner with ~90k miles, he bought it a year ago with ~50K miles, all the maintenance has been done on his truck, except the diff fluid change.

That's not unusual mileage it's close to what I used to do per year. I would buy a car ever 3 years usually with 100K on it all ready and drive it another 100K or more before I sold it.
