Off Road VS Sport

I am looking to purchase a new MGM 2014 Dbl Cab Tacoma 4X4 with a TRD Sport package and the JBL Nav system.

I test drove one yesterday, and I liked it however it just didn't seem... beefy enough to me I guess. I dont know.

I think it was the small tires and the low to the ground profile.

I dont want to turn it into a monster truck, but I would like maybe a 3in lift with some bigger meaner tires on it.

I dont plan to off road it all the time. Every so often Ill take it to get dirty. So it will mostly be a daily driver other than when I take my R1 out. I guess my question is should I get the sport because I do like the hood scoop, and then just upgrade the tires and suspension myself or should I go for the TRD Off Road package?

This is my first truck (took long enough) i'm currently driving a 2006 GTO and am tired of trying to squeeze things into that car. So Im not 100% sure on the lifts and everything else. I was browsing some stickies on it and that helped out a little.

Sorry for rambling any suggestions?

Im leaning towards the sport package and then just adding tires and lift after the fact. But that will be probably an additional $1500?

If you don't need the rear locker or ATRAC, then the sport will do you just fine.

Just some extra info. You can't get the off road with a long bed I you get the double cab.

 

Sport so you can get the DCLB

 

I like the look of the sport with the scoop and body colored panels. And with 4x4 you will be able to get most placed the Off-Road can. From what I've seen a decent lift will run you ~$1,100 and wheels and tires could be ~$2k or more depending on what you want.

I've taken my 4x4 sport off road already and if you're not going off road a lot, or in tricky places, it is plenty capable. I didn't air down my tires and never even came close to getting stuck, even in soft sand.

I'm sure you know... but the scoop is just for looks and is a pain in the ass when trying to dry the truck after a wash. Plenty of places for water to get into.

 

I'm glad I got the OFF ROAD over the Sport. Off course the Sport is plenty capable and that skewp is sexy, but the locker and A-trac on the OR comes in handy when you need it. Mid travel the truck and throw on some 33's and you will have a very capable nice size truck with whatever option you choose.

And X-Runner is the shemale x-dresser?

 

Plenty of stick-on skewps available for on eBay, equally dysfunctional as OEM but much less expensive.

VIS Racing also makes a $700 carbon fiber hood with skewp, though I think they have only the '05-'11 version.

Yeah , I've seen that the US market seems to be more proninently DCSB while in Canada it's the other way around

 

DCSB is great if your primary use is offroading , DCLB is far more useful if your primary use is other than offroading

 

I previously owned an OR and never "had" to use the e-locker so I upgraded to the Sport this time. I'm not a hard core offroader but I've taken the Sport offroad a few times and I've found it is plenty capable for my needs without the e-locker. I know that's not the case for many on here but it works for me. Either way you can't go wrong, both are great trucks.

 

Having said all that , after re-reading the OP , I would suggest a DCLB SR5

 

You could go with the SR or SR5 package too if you don't need the locker and are gonna upgrade the wheels, tires and suspension anyway.
