There is a slight chance I might move from Florida to the North East. I love my Taco, and would like to keep it forever, but I'm worried about how long the frame would last me. Maybe I should sell it in the south, and use the money to get a more rust proof vehicle (maybe a jeep XJ?) Just trying to think ahead.

If you want to keep it just get that protective coating done to the frame/undercarriage and call it a day. Perhaps the NW crowd will chime in for ya.

If you wash it like you should any vehicle in the North you won't have issues with the frame rusting. There are many people on the forum that live up North and have no issues.

Stock as Stock can be with duratracs and a roof rack
Also if you were to sell it you would make more selling north as a rust free truck is harder to come by

Not to ad to your decision BUT everything RUST up North....Jeep, the Big 3 and even Nissans are plagued by RUST....Toyota took their "pill" and handled it....Just depends who you talk to on "good or bad results"..

My '02 was reframed in '09 and the spare tire was done in 2013...that 15 year warranty keeps me happy and moving to FT.Myers from NH helps also:cool:

Use the advice from above...undercoating or spraying with a warranty should handle all your worries..

Yeah but, leaked internal documents have proven that Dana (the company that made the frames for Toyota) cut corners and used a cheaper metal than they had agreed to use. A metal more likely to rust than most vehicles. This is why Dana had to pay Toyota something like 10 million either in a court order or settlement. And Toyota had to do the recall.

So, I wouldn't say it's like any vehicle.

Is toyota still doing the frame coating? I remember a few years ago that they had started refusing to do it. Saying there was a window of time owners had to do it, and if you hadn't gotten the spray done yet you were SOL.

Has anyone had the toyota frame coating done in the past year?

Undercoat with what? If you're talking about the toyota undercoating, toyota won't do it in Florida for a Florida registered truck.

Bring it north, don't ignore it and you will do fine.

If your moving to the North East coastline,,again, don't ignore it, spray it down often if you beach comb. Just like in the North West.

1st gens are a great truck,,you just might regret that decision.

If the truck is mechanically sound and isn't rusted yet because you've been living in the south, there is absolutely no reason to get rid of it. The frames that are rotting out up here are 10+ years old and have been subjected to tons of road salt during their lives. Your frame isn't going to isntantaneously turn to a rust ball when you cross the Mason-Dixon line, bad rust takes time. Since you're obviously concerned, I would move to the northeast, bring your truck with you and have it undercoated up here once you move up. Find a reputable shop and have them treat the frame when the truck first gets here to stay ahead of any potential rust issues.

Also, Snoope is correct, everything rusts up here, doesn't matter what emblem is on the tailgate. Even if you get a different vehicle, if you don't want rust, you'll be paying for an undercoating job anyways so you might as well just keep what you have.

Like snoope said, it will be fine. Get it under coated, lots of places do it. Mine was re framed in 2012 and except for where it has been dragged over rocks it looks brand new. They are great winter vehicles. Everything rusts up here, just a fact of life you have to live with.

    x2468,

We ( the New England group;past & present) can give you info on shops to trust and one of the shops in that area does a lifetime fluid film/wax application....they are both "wheelers" and techs ;)..

You are young enough to "enjoy" Northern $$$$ and lifestyle....Don't worry, when the time comes and if enough Florida blood is in those veins..you will be back...............Ask me how I know ????

Por-15 or KBS coating. Spray it down with Fluid Film.

There is an interior frame coating that is worth applying as well. It comes in a rattle can and you can do the whole inside of the frame for less than $50 I think. I just recently sold a Jeep TJ that had a frame that looked completely clean on the outside, but was almost rusted through from the inside out.
