Does anyone know what ECT-I is. I now it is the 5 speed electronically controlled tansmision with intelligence. Atleast that is what toyota says. How does this benefit me and what does it do differently that transmissions without ect-I.

 

I don't know how it's different technically, all i know is that i love it. I have driven a manual for 9 years and was planning on getting my truck with the six speed. But after driving the automatic i was hooked. I love how the tranny will hang out in 5th gear as low as 35mph but drops down to 2nd as soon as you punch the gas. I do have a slight concern though. When i slowly accelerate from a dead stop, i think i feel a slight shutter in 1st gear. I dont feel it if i give it any significant amount of gas. Actually the sensation is so slight i'm not sure if i feel anything at all or it's just the road or me being paranoid. Either way i'm keeping an eye on it in case it gets any worse, or at least to the point i'm sure its there. Has anyone else noticed a slight vibration when slowly accelerating in 1st gear? Just wondering if its my immagination or not

 

What I understand it is that when it is switch ON, it shifts at a higher RPM. I use it pulling my duck boat, it make a real difference, I loved the option. A lot of the off-road guys use it when they are in the sand. I am talking about my 99 Pre Runner (w/233k) and I am picking up my 07 this week so I am assuming it is the same.

 

I don't think the 2nd gen taco's have an "on" option. At least i dont think mine does unless im overlooking it....

 

I could be wrong, but I believe it's to keep the transmission from 'gear hunting' on hills and while towing.

 

Thats exactly what it helps, mine worked the best when going down the freeway at 70...really smothed things out.
