How big of a box were you able to fit back there?
I'm looking at a sound ordinance powered sub, but may get a bigger (cheaper one) and put it behind the seat instead of under the passenger seat.

How much of an elevation change are you talking about? A few hundred feet shouldn't matter but a daily change of a few thousand could make the ECU confused with the timing (thus the knock). Are you running a AFE or similar CAI or filter? That or a dirty MAF from an oiled air filter could be a cause. Other than that or knock sensors, getting the ECU reflashed are the only things i can think of.

Pulled my drop-in liner this weekend and found some rust and when when I started to clean it up, I found a 1" hole. So, having welded exactly 3-4 times prior to this, I decided to weld in a patch. That went well until I burned through the bed and discovered that the 1" hole was actually a series of holes being held in place by the undercoating. So, on Sunday and cut out all of the bad metal:
    20140330_090456_zps94177650_36f831c66fc063c0211ee69bb4c9d0a1b5539547.jpg

Then, using some scrap metal I had lying around from my riding lawnmower, I fashioned a patch. This probably took the longest as is was a flat, 1/8" thick sheet that I had to shape using nothing but a vice and hammers:
    20140330_104024_zpsb65ed90e_b055c8032fcc684dde90466ae7289b1b33a7b440.jpg

The patch finally burned in. As you can see in the previous pic, the hole in the wheelwell was slightly wider than the patch so I had to build the bead up to get it sealed:
    20140330_114324_zps90061993_847c564d3408d339addf91be465a034e6f6758ce.jpg

As I was touching up the last few pinholes, I ran out of wire but got it done. Cleaned up the welds with an angle grinder the best I could, painted it with a rust inhibitor and reinstalled the drop-in.
    20140330_120638_zps86224c10_08924a9c1b6c49135929288c7f26fea89642dd46.jpg

Yes, the welds look like crap. This was the second time using this welder and I'm still trying to learn to temp and speed settings but I got better as the day wore on. Its now solid and the holes are gone. Periodically, I had to get under the wheelwell and scrape out the burning and charred undercoating but it otherwise went smoothly.

I fairly confident that I won't be seeing any job offers from body shops but that okay. Given that I was using a dremel to cut the holes out and a vice/hammers without use of any spoons, it still came out very well. Plus, since this is hidden by the liner, I'm okay with chalking this up to a learning experience.

Check/replace the PCV valve, it is a possible source of carbon buildup if it's bad.

Too rich of air/fuel mixture will cause carbon buildup (bad injectors) as well as a weak or failing ignition system. Maybe check the coils packs and the wires.

Another cause is wrong heat range in the plugs.

I wouldn't put the drop in liner back in, personally. That's how the rust happened in the first place lol

Oh that's right you pretend it's a Veyron sometimes when no one is watching.

Thoughts were that carbon buildup in the combustion chamber/piston head could be contributing to the predetonation by increasing compression.

But your plug burn doesn't look too bad, can't tell if you have the ideal cinnamon tinge or not. The plugs look fairly new by the electrode shape, but if you pull them all and compare, it would be possible to see if you care getting a reasonably consistent burn across all cylinders (eliminating the chance that the problem is related to one cylinder or one bank), and if so, focus on systems that affect all cylinders, as BDN said previously. The PCV is cheap and simple as a start, and ignition wires are another area to check, especially if they are original and have high resistance. How many mile on your rig now?

I often drive up into the mountains and back, have been the entire 15 years I've owned this truck, gaining/dropping 3500+ feet in elevation each way.

    I've never got engine knock.
