5 Lugs are the base model tacoma's, or non-prerunner 4x2 trucks. They come in regular access and a few years have full 4 door. For the level, there are really only 2 lift options most guys are running. FatBob's 5lug lift (which I'm running) and ReadyLift's 5 lug lift. Both are spacer and aal, fatbob's is cheaper and comes with longer shocks. You can run 235/75 on the stock steel without any lift, I was doing that for a while and it was great. With the lift, you can fit 31's if you trim off the plastic from behind the front wheels and unbolt the useless black boxes (commonly referred to as the Black Box mod). You can also fit 30s without the lift if you take out the black boxes.

As far as the third, I just bought a complete rear diff with 4.10 gears off of another member, bolts straight on. Dont have to bleed the brakes or anything. There are a few write-ups from 4x4 guys with pictures that are super helpful. I believe it needs to come from a non-TRD tacoma, post '95, with an 8.4 third member. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Mine came from a 09 prerunner. A buddy of mine has tools, only took a few hours. The 31s with the 4.10 are awesome, like a new truck.

Thank you, that clears up a lot. 5 lugs include only 2wd? I coulda swore I was seeing 4x4s too in some 5 lug pic threads as I search around here.

    Appreciate the info!

all 5 luggers are 2wd but not all 5 luggers are 4cyl, the xrunner is a V6 and only has 5 lugs.

some 6luggers are 4cyl and some are 6cyl and can be both 4wd or 2wd. hope that makes it clear.

as for lifts what jtye said is right. readylift, fat bobs or one last pretty expensive option is Total chaos ucas with SAW or Icon coilovers.

also what jtye said, i believe you can use 4.10s from other tacomas without e-lockers. I believe the only tacoma that comes stock with 4.10 gears is the 6lug 4cyl.

You could get extended links to help, but my links were fine with the one off lift I had.

5lugs are only a 2wd option, they also have their own specific suspension. Nothing off of a 6lug will swap over from the front. You can swap axles, but you will still need to swap hubs.

As for gearing. Local guy lowered 2" on XR wheels and tires on a 2012 5spd access 4cyl. He went 4.10's and complained (as I told him he would). Max gearing I would go for up to 32" tires would be 3.73's. After that I would look into getting higher gear ratios.

Lift options are Fatbob for the quick spacer lift or Total Chaos for the mid travel kit that cycles 9".

You can fit up to a 31x10.5 tire on stock suspension on stock wheels. It will rub the inner frame rails, but if you can get over that you are golden. Lift can get you 32's, TC can cram 33's.

Here is the info you need to know if you are going to be locking, LSD'ing, or gear swapping your rear end.

    TACOMA AXLE INFORMATION

If it were me and I was gonna lift again. I would save up for TC mid travel, progressive AAL in the rear, swap LSD and 3.73's out of a pre 09, and 32" duratracs.

Do it the way you want the first time, the right way. You end up spending way less, or you can pull a Seth, Ry Ry , or Phil Dammit and spend all sorts of money in stupid ways cuz you constantly like to pretend that it is going out of style.

Thanks for all the info guys! Man, still so much to learn.

My plans are up in the air. I need to be able to tow, off road look isn't bad, it just doesn't fit my use. Some of these look kinda off, even with the lifts.

We threw my son's 18" charcoal GT500 wheels off his 2014 V6 Stang and it looked awesome, but huge wheel gap. The sport truck look would suit my use, but I don't want a big drop either.

I tried his stock 2014 V6 Stang 5 spoke wheels, looked pretty good, 225/65-17 I think. I wasn't crazy about the stud length though. I thought the Ford TPS was working as I drove it about 5 miles with no light but I guess these need more miles to pop the light?

I've been looking at all the combos, I'll keep surfing the threads, I'm sure I'll figure something out eventually. Anyone done a mild drop and steel street rod wheels? I had Wheel Vintiques steelies and Vette center caps on my Jeep for a few years. With tall, thin tires and chopped fenders it looked very Willys.

    Thanks again!

Here is my truck lifted and lowerd, to give you a comparison.

At 5/5.25 drop I have hauled my welder cart and tools, miller welder/gen, wagoneer axles (dana 44's extended widths), and other various items, I have had to make some modifications to accommodate this but it is doable. There is a member on here with Dodge wheels on his as well.

Your drop options can range in any size from 1/1.5 to 6/7. Just depends on your use, road quality, and what look you want.

Always thought the SRT-4 wheels would look good with a mild drop. I almost bought a set of GT500's to use as spares, do like the split spoke look and stagger for the price that you can get those used for.

If you did the GT500 you could do a 3/4 drop with good meat wrapped around them and still be able to toe.

You truck looks great dropped. The wheels too, really nice.

My needs will include up to hauling 2 motos at about 750 lbs. and pulling a small travel trailer, so I'm a little worried about losing suspension travel. If I went up, I'd be worried about raising the gear ratio thru the bigger diameter tires too.

Looks great but until I start towing with her I think it'll stay stock. Thanks for the information. Lots to learn here!

You can swap the QA1's out for the air ride kit that Jess has. I will grab you a link to his build thread as he hauls his R6 in the back of his.

Good read, thank you. Good to see there are some options available in either direction.

I ran without it on my spacer lift, makes driving more fun.

I haven't had a sway bar for more than a year. I've never noticed a difference with or without it and I've had to dart left or right once or twice. Have never ever felt like the truck was anywhere near anything close to tipping over or in any danger because of it.
