gonna be sitting out in the elements? i've had a couple of "nice" wooden handles go bad on me from being clamed in the bed or on a rack, exposed the the elements. the painted fiberglass holds up much better.

 

that was one of my concerns with the wood handle...but thinking about it, i'd take the shovel and axe inside when i'm not on trips...those are two easy tools to steal and break my windows with to get more of my stuff...

so exposure to elements would be limited to 1-2 weeks at a time throughout the year

 

i like the idea of having the dual tool on the Husky, but wondering if it would really be needed if i have a shovel handy as well and a hammer with claw in my tool bag...but having the digger on the back of the axe will give me a lot of force to break ground or whatever

 

both are similar in price...

one is a great looking simple axe, versus the fiberglass handled multitool axe that is slightly less appealing (IMO, but nothing grip tape can't fix )

 

1: that would definitely open up the wood handle option

2: just make sure you're not going to get lazy. i had the same intentions of removing things likt that after wheeling. turns out i'm much lazier than i thought. not only do those things live on my racks now, but i even have a sleeping back rolled up in the back seat from the last wheeling trip 3 weeks ago

3: crime really that bad around you? had an ax and shovel in plain sight for 5 years and never had a thief/break-in issue.

 

not necessarily in my neck of the woods, but i work in denver and take the truck to various places around the denver area...it only takes one asshole to fuck it up

 

I carry a SOG Fasthawk and a mid-length hatchet. The SOG is great for clipping branches to use as kindling and the mid-length will do everything except take down a tree (easily). Having a full sized axe is nice when needed but I've found smaller hatchets more versatile.

perecisely. a hatchet and an axe is like a tow strap and a snatch strap.....they can both do the job of the other, but man can it suck if you have to resort to that.

 

or go Hickory Pulaski 36" handle..would have to order this one tho

 

I carry a 26" Estwing Campers Axe in my truck all the time. It resides behind the passenger side rear seat. Fits perfectly laying down. And these things are bullet proof and hold a great edge!

 

Estwing stuff is the bomb.

I second Estwing. I have a hatchet from them and thats all I carry. I can tackle a small tree fast enough and the blade have never gone dull.

 

I have a full size w synthetic handle and a gerber hatchet. Dont usually needa full size unless your choppin trees down so I use the only quickfist I have to carry a shovel. Need to install some moe qf's on the roof rack.
