I know OME 885 and 5100s have been beaten to death (I've read the threads). I know that it is recommended that OME coils be used with OME shocks... but I have these new 885 coils that I can't seem to sell and now I have these 5100s too. WHY do they recommend not to use OME coils with 5100s... other than thats what OME says.

What are the consequences? compared with the stock springs and 5100s

Also, how will the ride be different between 885 coils with 5100s (set at 0) vs stock springs with 5100s (set at 2.5)?

    getting there....
you can definitely use the 5100's with the 885 coils....not sure where you heard differently.......you just need to leave them on the stock setting.........cant preload those coils.

The OME shocks are designed to damp the OME springs. The 5100s are not. So you can get a stiffer ride and the springs can over power the shocks. People do it and they like it...others don't.

Personal belief is that if you are building a system that works as closely together as suspension-Staying same company for all of it is a good idea. I don't need everything to be the same brand...but those parts are designed for each other....ya know??

so the ome 885 springs are stiffer than the 5100 can handle... hmmm... but if you preload the stock spring does this not make them stiffer too... so as long as the 885s aren't preloaded then shouldn't it be fine?

They can handle it...but they are stiffer than the 5100s are designed for...iirc. The 5100s are a longer, stronger spring than the stocks....so even set at 0 lift...they are still being strained.

Chris4x4 has the numbers tattooed on his arm or something....He can probably explain it a bit better....

I also think wwfirefighter (Danny) runs 885s with 5100s at stock height with the 885s doing the lifting

    I'm running 884's with the 5100 strut.
You'll be fine using them, just to get the best performance OME recommends using their struts.

what kinda ride should i expect.... vs using the stock coils on the 5100s? Which would be a rougher ride... 885 and 5100s or stock springs and 5100s

Since the 885 will put stress on the 5100 what kinda of wear and tear should I expect.

Technically, the 885's should not be used with a spacer, or be put into a shock in which preload is applied. That being said, SS has been using them and is happy with them. Preloading the 885's increases the spring rate. I havent done the math, but at the .85" setting (.425" preload) the spring rate is between 650# and 675#. The OME spring will give the best ride characteristics on the OME shocks. If used hard off road, the 5100's can heat up at a faster rate than the OME's as the 5100's hold less oil.

    X2.

If useing the stock coils on the 5100's, ride quality depends on the setting of lift.

The 885's would have a softer ride.

night/day difference huh:rolleyes:...you realize that the 5100s achieves lift the exact same way a coil spacer does, that is preload the spring...;)

to the op..OMEs are a longer coil, which is why people say not to use them w/ the bills...and if you do, keep them at the lowest setting (least preload). also, as others have mentioned, the OME springs are designed to work together w/ the shocks in a spring/damper fashion...the bills are not...

    Wow, that is surprising.

    Just so I understand:
5100s with stock springs set at 2.5" will have a stiffer ride than 5100s with 885 springs set at stock level?

If this is true, I may get 885s rather than increasing the preload on my stock springs from 1.75 to 2.5 if I am looking for a softer ride.

    my bad...but

whats the length of the OEM coils versus the OME coils? i'm going to venture a guess that compressing the OEM coils some 2.5" is comparable or less than compressing the OMEs to 0.85 on the bils...therefore the OMEs are compressed MORE than the OEM, thus giving a rougher ride....this isnt even taking into account the differing spring rate of the coils...

    correct me if im wrong...

??, im sure the higher spring rate OMEs would have a stiffer ride the the OEMs...but correct me if im wrong guys.
