Honestly, I absolutely love my DCSB Taco. It has been hands does the most fun off road/daily driver combo I have ever owned and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Having said that, If I was to do it all over again (buying new) I would either get the 4Runner or the FJ. Having built in secure storage is a great advantage. I have been looking for a while now for a good deal on a shell, something that is built in to the 4Runner and the FJ. However, I have also had to haul plywood, furniture, etc... A washing machine and dryer fit perfectly in the bed btw...

All in all though, these are rare occasions that I could have found alternatives for. Go for the 4Runner. If you're looking used, don't worry about a factory locker (nice to have but don't over value it) as there is an enormous amount of after market upgrades available. If you can find one with A-Trac then ABSOLUTELY YES BUY IT. A-Trac is amazing!

I don't know how much off roading. I want to spend 2 months photographing the southwest, either this fall or next spring. And several trips to wildlife reserves, and maybe going out with some friends who do off road. I'm not into off road as a sport, more into getting to places and exploring. I imagine stock with a skid plate or 2. Maybe later a 1 inch lift, but the truck would be my daily driver as well and I don't want to stress it too much.

First thing is finding a reliable vehicle. I'd like TDR if I find a good vehicle with it, but at this point I'll take one without. I planned on spending 7K for something with 140K miles or less in good shape. But I'm having a hard time finding anything right now. I didn't realize the prices on used vehicles went up, and it seems people are keeping what they have until it's worn out. It might take a while.

Where would a FJ62 or FJ80 fit into this discussion?

    The landcruisers are worse mpg.

Thelgord, I'd advertize for a shell. And call junkyards. Lots of people have them in their back yards and never get around to selling them. I had a really nice one on my old yota years ago. A little taller, insulated, wired and moon roof. When the truck died the shell went with it- to the junk yard.
