What is your take on dual sport motorcycles?

    I am getting very interested in buying one of these, but not too sure what to look for. Are there any particular makes that you would recommend? Is there somethings that I can't go without? Or is it possible to get a dirtbike and make it street legal?

    Lots.
    Only way to go is BMW. That isn't true of course but those things are amazing! Got to test drive one. The power, capability. As nibble as a dirtbike but fast as a sportbike. SWEET!

    Depends on what you want to do(More street or more trail). The BMW's are for serious extended trips and are 3x's the price of anything else. Honda, yamaha, ktm, suzuki, & kawasaki all make them, but I would recommend taking all of them for a ride in the parking lot of the dealership.

    And since your in Montana ;), you could just buy a dirtbike and get a license plate for it, my buddy did. Just don't get caught. You can also pick up a dirtbike and make it street legal, all you need here is mirror, horn, two stage brake light, and liscense plate light, same thing you need to license a 4 wheeler. They make kits to do that. Just make sure if you do get one, you get both the motorcycle street license and the ohv sticker.

    Yea I had the feeling I was going to get the answer of going to test drive one. I think the primary purpose would be for the street but it would also be nice to take an adventure into the mountains. Do you know if the rules hold true to Colorado also? I plan on moving in a month or so.

    No idea about CO. The only reason I know about here, is the fact that I had to figure out all that for my 4wheelers.

    On second thought, a dualsport should be legal (on-road)anywhere you go as long as your licensed to ride a streetbike, and legal offroad as long as you have the OHV sticker.

    The issue may come about if you do the conversion, because those rules are most likely different everywhere you go. I don't know of anywhere else that 4-wheelers can be street legal, and they would fall under the same category as a conversion here.

    I loved my dualsport!! I treated that bike like crap though, taking it through trails i probably shouldn't and flying down the freeways. I want a new one pretty bad, but the the Suzuki 650 dualsport is lacking on the looks, and same with the honda 650.

    check out ktm's line of motorcycles. they have several dual-sports that are supposed to be really good.

    I know what you mean about the looks with both those names. I'm looking at them right now at their website. I'm not liking the KTMs very much. Maybe if I did a conversion on one their dirtbikes.

    well its more of a street-legal dirt bike. It has the looks and functionality of a dirt bike with the added benefit of being street legal. Are you looking for more of the true look of a dual sport?

    I like the aggressive dirt bike look. But to me I don't see any blinkers or lights on it. So how is it street legal?

    You do have a good point about the blinkers, i had thought about that too as soon as i posted the link. i'll find out for you. But i think it does have a headlight on it

    Ok you cant tell from the pictures on their website but after some googling i think the turn signals are mounted with rear brake light all on the flap that hangs off the rear fender. And the a license plate would attach below that i think. I think you might have to buy some side-view mirrors though. But just do a little research on the 530 EXC and that should answer many of your questions.

    From a little research on the 530 EXC it seems like the maintenance would be any issue with this bike. Too many adjustments would have to be taken for higher RPM riding on say the highway. But it would be nice. They seem pretty capable

    After reading some on that forum I see what you're saying about the EXC bikes. That new 690 enduro would be pretty sweet, but that seems like alot of bike for me.
