    I just bought a 2012 TRD offroad auto that had 20k miles stock tires with a bed cover. My first tank was 17.9 mpg. About 1/2 city 1/2 70mph highway driving. The gas light came on and I drove it about 8 miles more and it took 16.75 gallons. I thought these things had 21 gallon tank? If so, my light comes on with 5 gallons left. That equals about 90 miles once the light comes on.

    My previous truck was a 01 Double cab 4x4 3.4 auto with 202k and it got 18.7 when I traded it in.

    My previous truck before that was a 98 3.4 2wd extra cab 5 speed that got 22mpg with 185k.

    $5.23 per US gallon. So $110 if totally empty.

    My last two fill ups I averaged 18.9mpg. That's about 50/50 city/hwy and the truck has 84,000 miles on it. That's about the same mpg as when I first got the truck in 08, though it seems to be a little more difficult to get it over the 20mpg mark now.

    I will say that it always did pretty well when towing. I used to haul a 2500lb race car on a 16ft open car hauler, along with 4 spare wheels and tires, spare trailer tire, jack, air tank, a couple of tool boxes, and me and three other people. There was literally no more room to fit anything in that truck lol. It averaged about 15-16mpg for the 3 hour trip. I didn't think that was too bad.

    In the winter (averaging about -25C here this year) I am getting about 15MPG, and in the summer about 17MPG.

    I am conciously easy on the throttle, and try to set cruise at 110km/h, though have done my share of 120km/h. When I end up doing 130km/h needle moves so quick it isn't worth mentioning. :)

    I have a 2013 TRD o/r Access Cab, with m/t. Have a friend with the same truck, but the TRD sport, auto, 4 door. He claims he is getting about 18mpg.

    I am wondering how much of it is tires. I have the stock 265 rugged trails, and the sport's come with 225's I think. I love the look of my Rugged Trails, but I may try something tamer when I switch to see if it helps gas mileage.

    Anyone had luck changing the tires?

    I fill up (18gal) for about $65. Not getting the best mileage right now but lots of stop and go, winter mix and sitting in car washes :D

    And the oil needs to be changed tomorrow.

    I just read that a BMW SUV weighing in at 5000 lbs, 301 hp, and 295 ft lbs is rated at 27 hwy. Toyota can do better. Also a 500+ hp Bentley is better.

    I just bought a 2014 4x4 Double cab and my first tank got 15.8 mpg, the second was 15.6 mpg. I drove mixed highway and city but not aggressive at all. Should I be concerned with the low mileage or is it normal?

    16 for mostly city isn't bad. If I could get mine to stay at or above 16mpg on a regular basis, I'd be satisfied. Accelerating slowly and coasting as often as possible will help.

    Just prior to filling up last week, I jacked my tire pressure up to 38 psi, under the assumption higher psi=less rolling resistance=better mileage. Verdict: 13.2 mpg. Same as previous.

    Sucks you guys are getting such bad mileage. I just checked mine again. 2012 DCSB 4x4 TRD offroad auto 21K miles stock BFG Rugged terrians with a bed cover and I got 19.35 mpg. 50/50 city/highway. Highway I drive 70-75 mph. City is a lot of stop and go with many short trips under 10 miles. I went exactly 300 miles before my fuel light came on. Took 15.5 gallons for 300 miles. This is in SoCal with their crappy 87 octane that used to make my previous 2 Tacoma's knock and ping.

    I'm curious as to why the Tacomas don't get better mileage. I just mean slightly better. I really want to buy one, but I'm concerned my fuel expenditures would increase.

    I own and drive a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban LS 1500 2wd 5.3 V8 with 140K miles on it. Original powertrain, stock everything with one exception: I put a new set of Michelin LTX MS2 tires in size 245/75R16 on it when we bought it two years ago. It is our family vehicle so it's a stocker.

    I keep track of our mileage. Using 89 octane fuel, and driving around Springville Utah, we average 16-17 mpg in city driving. Traveling on I-15, I have tested on numerous occasions the following speeds and gotten the following results for fuel economy:
    75mph = 21-22 mpg
    70mph = 23+mpg
    65mph = 25+mpg
    60mph = 27.2-27.5 mpg.

    Details:
    Cruise control on, cruising in right lane (not to annoy traffic), A/C on, family on board. Careful to avoid quick starts and conscious efforts made to coast where possible without annoying other drivers.

    The numbers above are honest, not exaggerated. "Maybe he's relying on the dash computer for his numbers and it's bogus." My dash computer is accurate. I have tested it against the manual calculations so many times it's pointless to test it any more. Always within .5 mpg accuracy.

    We make frequent trips from Springville to Centerville, 65 miles one way, and I test our mileage. I fill up at Maverick on main street in Springville, drive to Centerville, return, and fill up again to test MPGs for the trip. The numbers above represent my findings, both on the dash computer, and on my calculator.

    So, why don't I see anybody getting those numbers with Tacomas? My truck is not special, it's normal. Normal 4L60E tranny and 3.42 gears in back. Stock exhaust and intake. I use synthetic oil, yes...but that's normal too. If a 5200 pound Suburban with a 300hp V8 can get those numbers, why can't a Tacoma? Terrible aerodynamics?

    My best mpg was 16.5mpg and that was on a highway trip. I was hoping for better but I was stuck in stop and go traffic in the mountains for at least an hour. I cruised at 75mph for the rest of the way. Still need to replace the spark plugs. I've heard it helps a little.

    It is downright shameful on Toyota's part that 5500-6000lbs pickups with 300hp get the same mileage as a 4200lbs pickup with 236hp. V8 pickups with 350-400hp are close too. (Tundra, you're not even considered a player in this game).

    09 ac 2.7L 5spd 4x4 I'm on tank number 4 and my numbers have been going up, first tank was 18mpg (I hammered on it cause I was late for a few hockey games), last tank was 21mpg I got brave and pushed the fuel light to 690km or 428.7 miles. I do a mix of city and hwy. Gas as of yesterday was 1.29 per liter or 5.91 per gallon, I just pop down to sumas wa once a week to get gas and groceries saves me thousands of dollars a year. My old 88 3.0 auto 4runner would burn through a tank every 3 days lol my honda crx does 530ish km per tank(40L tank) but i drive it like an ass hat im sure it could do better. I bought the 4cyl after hearing complaints about the v6 so far I'm happy I mean its a truck if I wanna set mpg records I'll jump in my CRX

    On my 2014 TRD Sport the first tank of fuel I averaged 21.34 MPG. The second tank was about 20.75.

    On my Tundra with the 5.7 liter motor we average about 22 mpg on the highway which is the same as my 2003 Tacoma with the 2.7 liter motor.

    The higher MPG's are always obtained by the operator. If you are impatient you will pay in consumption. Your choice. Other factors involved are tires, oils, etc. If you modify your ride you will generally pay more for it, literally.
