Different approach to a snorkel

I thought about it but it's expensive.

 

It's only $11/ft didn't seem too bad if only need a foot

 

I collected all of the parts and ordered the elbow and alum tube. If they are in today, I will have my weekend project. The ebay listing for the tube does not exist anymore, but here is the website I ordered from. They have 0.065" tube, which is good because the op suggested using thinner than the 0.120" tube. Still 4" o.d.

The only thing I wish I did different was measure your final diameter before cutting the hole. I drilled a 4" hole and spent a lot of time dremeling in it wider.

 

That's the same tube I used for mine. Got it done Tuesday after work.

 

Good to know. I have a 4" hole saw, but I'm not sure if it is o.d./i.d. I have some carbide bits for a die grinder that worked well on my frame. I am hoping they will eat through the firewall quick enough... Once I get a chance to measure the donut, maybe I can find a larger hole saw at home depot.

4R version, used the stock intake for most of the parts, and used a piece of PVC for now, if it seems like it is getting too hot I will swap with AL, total cost: $7. One cool thing I did was by using the stock pieces, I retained the scoop which would prevent any water from the top getting sucked in.

 

I really need to do this. I just don't want to end up having a lack of parts then getting stuck running to the parts store over and over. That's the only issue. After looking at all the pictures I'm not sure if I would be better off getting a 5" hole saw and calling it good from there or what?

 

Has anyone done something like this on a 2.7? It seems like a super cheap alternative to a snorkel. That, and my airbox gets filled with mud once and while..?

The 2.7 has a MAF, but I didn't see one on your guys' trucks? Must be some sort of pressure sensing-manifold-type-sensor-volume thing eh?

Also, my airbox is right beside the fender and it has my filter in it, so.. That makes it a little more difficult..

Anyways, if anyone knows where/if anyone's done it on a 4banger that would be appreciated !

 

MAF is over this way under the engine cover on the engine side of the air filter.

I wondered, haha. But then again I haven't seen under the hood of the 2.7L.

 

My MAF is attached to the airbox on the fender. Your guys' is right on top of the manifold basically. I'll have to look into it and rig something up! Thanks for the info!

 

Keep in mind it's a whole lot easier to make a small hole bigger than to make a big hole smaller. I suggest erring on the smaller side, and spend a little time fine-tuning the size with a die grinder or dremel or file.

Still happy with mine! No issues with water entry or cabin airflow.
