It's not training , it's genetics & I dont want to start a shit storm over pits but honestly I wish this breed would just go away.....just like everyone will say "it's not the breed, its the owner." Anyone who really believes this is ill informed, it can be the owner, alot of times it may well be the owner but it doesn't change the fact they're breed for aggression & they can go off on their own , no help needed from the tiny dick crowd with the "Look at my badass dog" mentality... these types of dog owners can go away too...just my $.02

You may want to look into some preemptive socialization rehab, in case this causes some anxiety/fear based aggression on your pups part in the future - there is another dog in our social rehab class with a similar problem that went ignored for sometime, and she is now quite a handful! Sorry to hear about this, really sad :( hope your little guy is on the mend!

Agreed. It reminds me of the dude that owned the tiger and then the tiger killed him. I'm sure he trained the tiger really well, but it is still an animal with stronger instincts than brains.

Not trying to start anything but I have to partially disagree... I think that it has to do with both nature and nurture, but not all pits are naturally aggressive. Some are born that way, but to dismiss the entire breed as overly aggressive is a huge mistake. Pits can be amazing friendly family dogs, some are just wired wrong. That happens in every breed, not just pits, they just have a stronger reputation. I don't remember where it was but I read something online (not sure how accurate so don't quote me) but the basics of the article was that the population of pitbulls in comparison to any other breed was a lot higher, therefore it seemed more aggressive because the number of incidents were higher, but percentage wise, the amount of incidents to the population of the breed it was actually lower than other breeds....

I agree... had a yellow lab - got her at 6 weeks old. She was sweet, most of the time. Think Kujo when she was eating. She'd never been starved or abused. She bit me on my hand through a towel and the bite went to the bone - thankfully was only one tooth. All I was doing was drying her feet after a walk and after she was done with dinner. Then a short while later, she attacked my dad. Ripped both his arms open. Found out later her whole litter was the same way. Too much inbreeding :notsure:

To Geekhouse - report the attack to animal control - do they take reports of attacks to other dogs? If they do, I'd make sure it's reported.

True, individually speaking, not all pits are overtly aggressive towards humans, but just like the owner that says "My dog has never bitten anyone." That also may be true , but thats just 1 particular dog, they can't assume that every other persons pit behaves the same, quite the opposite , you can't have a breed of any kind that was genetically tailored for a specific purpose & then be surprised they exhibit the characteristics that were genetically bred into them, I have a Lab & she is without question the most loving ,accepting animal I've ever seen/had in my life, she isn't even the alpha in her on yard with other dogs always the submissive... I'm not a hunter of any kind, yet she is the perfect hunting/retrieving , she chases & swims for her "catch" & brings it to me with the perfect "soft mouthing" Duck hunters look for, had her since a pup, never once have trained her to do this,, it's not training, its genetic, she just instinctively exhibited the traits bred into her.. you see my point here

Warning- threadjack coming. Though I'd get more responses from dog owners here...

My girl is starting to get some hotspots. She got her flea meds last week but has been going at a paw, armpit, and front of her leg. We took her to the vet once before and they put her on antibiotics. Anyone know any home remedies? I have read of dabbing on peroxide. I know lotions and creams are a bad idea. Hate to see her itch so much. Will go to the vet soon if it doesn't improve.

Oatmeal bath.... grind up oatmeal, mix with water and slather on her. Leave 5 - 10 minutes, rinse well

This, also I don't know if you have access to any but eucalyptus oil soaked in a small strand of leather (like a collar) is excellent for flea problems & if you have fleas in house get some eucalyptus leaves (doesn't take a huge amount) & scatter them on all carpeted areas for about an hour & I can practically promise you'll have a flea free home for a while , the fumes from the oil literally causes the fleas & their eggs to rupture/explode on contact..

Thanks, I'll try that tonight/this weekend. mak90 pm'd me with benadryl suggestions and the vet confirmed. I'll try the natural approach first.

Good idea. My sister in Santa Barbara had her place overrun with fleas. I'll pass that on!

    +1 to both of you!

You can try the eucalyptus oil or get some diatomaceous earth or 20 mule team borax and spread over the floor. Leave down a couple of hours and vacuum up. Fleas gone
