Are 4x4 D-Cabs slower than a PreRunner D-Cab ?

I'm in the market for a 1st gen D-Cab. I would prefer a PreRunner, but all the decent D-Cabs I find are 4x4. Really Dont wan't the extra weight of the 4x4 transmission, plus the lower mpg. Anyone know if the extra weight slows the taco down ?

 

Slightly, but not by much.

 

It is an extra couple hundreds pounds you carry around. Personally I would never get a truck without 4x4 so I dropped to a 4 cylinder 4x4 and get 24 mpg regularly

 

Get yourself a Prerunner, load up all 4 seats with buddies/family and toss in some beach/camping gear and then go up against a 4x4 that's got a driver only. Where does that put the lighter weight of the Prerunner?

 

Get the 4x4, you'll be glad you have it.

I've got an 01 prerunner double cab, and 4x4 would be nice to have.

 

so in other words, buy the 4x4 and be lonely and you will get around just fine...



does it really matter which truck is faster?

either way, both trucks can reach the speed limit, unless street racing is legal in your part of the world...

 

extra weight slows any car down but not by much. 4x4 better to have it and not need it , then need it and not have it.

Both of them can do 80 without issue. You might just use a little more gas getting the 4x4 to do so.

If you don't have the 4x4 in certain conditions (mud, sand, snow) the Prerunner will be MUCH slower.

If you're looking for a quarter mile vehicle, you're so far off base than 4x4 vs prerunner shouldn't even be in your thoughts.

The salient question here is "will you ever need 4x4" and/or "will you ever find 4x4 useful".

 

how about offroad racing which is faster there

 

The difference between the two trucks is minimal -- I doubt you would even notice.
