    Hey guys,

I'm slowly dabbled into mild trails and am hooked on off-roading my taco,
I also love just letting my dog out and she runs around and follows the truck, how do I train her to stop running in front of the truck? I have to keep a constant eye on her so I don't hit her, and I would rather keep my eye on the trail. Any tips? Thanks.

He is asking for tips on how to train his dog to not run in front of the truck. not asking if he should keep his dog in the truck or not.

I have nothing good to add to this, though. A few of my friends do this and their dogs don't run in front of the truck.
Dogs love the wilderness. It's probably my dogs favorite thing.

Is she trained well in recalling? Only thing I can think of is to always reprimand her for going past the front of the truck. She afraid of the horn or anything? If she is you can honk it. Otherwise keep her in the truck. If she's not smart enough to get out of the way as you're driving I guarantee she'll stay out of the way if you bump into her once or twice lol (mind you off-roading is slow so wouldn't hurt her)

I have a shock collar for duck hunting that I use to train my dog. You can train them to do almost anything with it.

The collar has a button that makes a 'beep' noise and a button to shock the dog. Anytime you want your dog to not do something, you hit the 'beep' button while saying, "no" and then shock them. Eventually, the dog learns that the beep means they're about to get shocked and they do what they're told without you having to shock them 9 times out of 10.

It took my dog 1 shock to learn that the beep was a bad thing, so I've only had to shock my little buddy once.

That being said, I think training a dog to not go in front of your truck is a little too open-ended for them to learn though. I think the dog wouldn't know what he was doing wrong....it'd be like shocking him every time he walks in a room....I just don't think he'd get it.

I do this with mine too. I eat jerky while wheeling and will get there attention and toss it behind the truck. Eventually they just hang out back there. But its a learning process just go slow .

I wouldn't want my dog running around my truck when off-roading...1 mistake and you could run over him....not worth it IMO

I work for Wonder Labs Kennel, I help train duck dogs and the only thing I can think of is a shock collar. I know some people think shocking dogs is mean but iv gotten my self with the collar a few times and It really dont hurt that bad. Start out with a low shock but always use the buzzer or beeper first so they can learn what that sound is and soon all you should have to do is hit the buzzer.

I just don't think the dog would be able to associate it walking in front of the truck. I think it's just too broad and not specific enough.

Thats what I was thinking too, but I was just putting suggestions out. I really don't know if there is a way to teach a dog to not go in front of a truck on the trail, On black top that is a different story.

My theory would be have a kennel or a dog bed designated for "time out." Something you can take with you on the trail. Identify her bad behavior immediately with the assertive "bad" dog, walk her to the time out zone, and verbally saying "time out" and lock her up. The more consistent you are with this the sooner she will associate all three action with what she is doing wrong, thus learning not to do it again. Reward her when she walks along side the truck or listens to your command. Eventually You'll be able to just say "time out" and she'll just walk over there.
So once that is established take the kennel or bed with you on the trail and exercise my theory.
If this makes no sense call me out on it, i'm hung over badly.

This would definitely work. I'd walk behind the truck too.

    x2. Glad I'm not alone

Yeah, I taught my dog not to even get close to the road with one shock. He won't go within 20 yards of it, which is good b/c if someone hit him, I'd probably put a bullet in them lol

Yea she is trained well and she listens for the most part very well (keep in mind she is still only 8 months old) I dont have a problem with her running across the trail in front of me if she is, lets say, 4 2 - 4 truck lengths ahead of me, I just dont like it when she goes right in front of the truck, I have to constantly stop. I have thought about lightly bumping her, I know my old man did this with one of our old dogs (again lightly) and they never did it again and never got hurt from it, I just cant see the her when shes in front of me lol. I would, however like to leave this as a last resort, Ill try a shock collar first I think.

My aunt has a 2 year old German Shepard, great dog, just super hyper. The dog would never listen, so she got a shock collar and had to use it a few times, now she no longer uses it on the dog. They learn quickly. Sometimes she just pulls out the remote, even when the dog isnt even wearing the collar to get her under control.

I have no problem with her being in front of he truck, example she is 3 truck lengths ahead, thats fine because I can see her, I just dont like her running right in front of my truck as i'm driving it.

Right now is a wide open fire break around town that I run her on, I drive my truck and she runs around the field while following me. She is very good at coming back when I call her and right now I am training her to walk beside the truck when I say "heel," she is slowly getting that too.
