Best tailgate locking solution? Right now leaning towards PL5400. Opinions please.

Looking to add a tailgate locking solution to my hard fold tonneau for added security. Currently looking at the pop & lock

$100 PL5400 Black Manual Tailgate Lock with Bolt Codeable Technology for Toyota Tacoma

PL5400 with the codeable bolt so I only have 1 key to carry. Not looking to run wires for an automatic lock. Just want to make sure before I pull the trigger there is not a better solution out there by a different company. Pop & lock seems to be the most popular solution by far. I also saw a few posts about the PL5400 jamming on some people early on. All opinions on the topic are appreciated.

I installed the 5400 on my Tacoma a month ago. Real easy to install and having only one key was a goal of mine. Same key as the ignition works excellent. No problems so far and I open it about 10 times a day. Locks good and works well. Go for it.

 

Recommend a site and a reasonable price? Would like to receive it by the end of next week.

I don't feel like this will hold up for years & years. During a bad rainstorm, it sort of locked up. Had to use hair dyer & graphite to get it functioning.

At this time, it is the best solution.

 

I have been looking at this as well, as I will be ordering the bakflip G2..

 

I have this one on my Tacoma. It works well enough, I just wish it had a more robust feel and that there was a more imaginative solution for locating the driver's side latch pull rod. I re-used the stock locating clip and shaped the rod slightly, but the 2nd gen tailgate and latch mechanism just isn't as sturdy feeling as the 1st gen.

 

Did you flip it around like I saw in a YouTube install video? In the video the rod was flipped so it was bent upwards and ran along the top of the tailgate.

I have the same one on mine. It functions great but as mentioned I feel like the handle is going to break if I pull too hard, but so far so good.

 

Yes, I flipped it as per the instructions. But the rod follows an angled path to the latch that flipping it exacerbates. As the release lever is pulled, some of the travel is taken up as the rod tries to straighten (especially if the locating clip along the way isn't used) and the latch on that side disengages slightly after the right side which takes a more sensible route. Not a big deal really, but as an engineer I tend to fuss over such nonsense and maybe I'll take a closer look once I retire and have time for trivial pursuits.

Not the fault of the Pop-N-Lock, but I was disappointed to find the composite tailgate lid or cover was held on by screws threaded into plastic nuts pushed into the tailgate, more than one of which was already stripped during assembly. And the metal itself seemed rather thin, making one wonder about the durability of the tailgate in general. It probably wouldn't have bothered me if I hadn't just dropped over 30 large into buying what will likely be my last truck. I'm sure the materials and engineering are within industry standards and everything will be fine.

 

I just replaced my PL5300 which stopped working after a year and a bit. Bought the

$100 PL5400 Black Manual Tailgate Lock with Bolt Codeable Technology for Toyota Tacoma

PL5400 to replace it. So far, it looks a bit stronger than the PL5300 which had more plastic. I did have to bend the rod slightly (the one that has to be flipped) since it was rubbing on one of the tailgate metal tabs. Hopefully this model will last longer than the last one.

PL5400 just with the added power un-lock/lock actuator. Love it, I use my ignition key and the power to un-lock/lock the tailgate.

Haven't failed at all. Lithium grease the shit out every moving part.

 

Does one lithium grease stand out as better than the rest? And did you spray directly into the keyhole as well?

 

I installed the 5400 in January. It jammed( the lock cylinder ) on me the other day. Haven't been able to get it to work since.

 

Not sure if brand is better than another brand, but I used this one from Oreillys.


As for the key cylinder, I used all purpose powdered sylicone lubricant, same brand as above.

Best thing to do is get in touch with Pop & Lock. Others got their seized up kit with a new one.
