I have the same concern with my SnugTop Topper. I really want to put a tent on top so I can use the bed for secure storage but my understanding is the topper is only rated for about 200 lbs. What do you all think about this setup? The topper is fiberglass so I do worry about it cracking and such.

You can reinforce the shell by doing one of a few things. A couple of jack posts or by adding a hoop to transfer the load from the shell to the bed.

I have a SnugTop as well with the built in Yakima tracks. So far, so good for me.

I don't have any experience with fiberglass caps, so if it was me, I'd call the company and explain what you want to do and find out if the 200lb weight rating is while driving or while parked. If its 200lbs while driving I'd assume you'd be fine considering thats more than the thule weight rating on the cab.

Dumb question but will a CVT or Tepui RTT fit and work well on something like a Thule Xsporter? Are there any downsides to using this instead of a fixed bed rack? I have a kayak that needs to be above the roof line (not at the same time as the RTT) but I like the idea of being able to lower it some for the tent to keep it lower on the truck.

any RTT should work - might require a little different hardware like longer bolts but nothing major.

There are lots of other options for over cab mounting besides Thule. I run a Bajarack flat utility rack. Fits the RTT perfectly and has a low profile, plus a much higher load capacity. I keep my Yakima racks on the camper shell for surfboards and other toys...
See post #1 and scroll down for my pics.

I agree that Thule racks sit too high but for me with my 4runner being my daily driver I love the ease of removal just unlock them push the button and it lifts off.

Yes I bought them for the same reason to take on and off. But I've never removed it haha. Plus on a 4runner any rack you use it will still be top heavy. The only way around that is to build a trailer and pull it.

I'll be changing my setup on the cap & ditching the Thule cross-bars for a custom setup.
I bought the PrInSu rails from zscott and will be fabbing a more sturdy mounting system with them.
Since the taco is no longer the DD I've got more leverage to play with stuff. :D
