I noticed that there is carbon build up on my exhaust pipe and Im wondering if its got anything to do with changing over to AFE intake that I put on my 2011 Tacoma, is this normal, has anyone else experienced this.??

Every car, truck, and even motorcycle I've had or looked at has had this. I cut my exhaust off at the last hanger cause in the past it would spit black crap over the word 4x4 on the mud flap and they just look like crap over time anyways.

even my truck with a stock intake with TRD oiled filter does it. Its normal. if you have a polished tip on it, just wash it and use some neverdull on it if it bothers you :)

One of the mechanics at the local Toyota dealer told me is I am running Higher Octane Gas that I need to and I am To Hard On The Gas Pedal. Run 86 Octane and be Easier On The Gas Pedal and that will Stop.

I can't argue the point about the heavy foot, but I fail to see the point about the high octane fuel. I don't think that mechanic really understands what octane rating means with respect to combustion.

He said that the higher octane was burning hotter and the heavy foot was causing the carbon build up to blow out the exhaust pipe and end up on the fender and the mud flap.

He was wrong. Higher octane gasoline does not burn hotter. It is simply more resistive to early auto-ignition from heat/compression, which would cause knock.

    Some stuff...
My rig is 7 months old with 5K miles and my TRD exhaust has some black soot on it. I run Mobile1 Fully synthetic and baby her, so I think you're good.

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
Both of my Tacomas did that, the little drain hole in the bottom of the tip tends to get clogged up too. If you let it go too long its tougher to get off.

If you use a higher octane fuel than what you need it will burn to slow an actually effect performance an your engine will not perform as well as it would with the right octane that burns completely an efficiently.

Just ask some one that drag races.

1999 4runner with 5vzfe, 220,000 miles plus, exhaust pipe is clean as a whistle it's entire life, hard on gas pedal or not, always 89 octane

    2013 tacoma, sooty pipe.

I wonder what tuning they have in place which causes this because it must be possible to get rid of it, but it might mean chemically harsher emissions to the environment to tune it out (carbon less damaging), or maybe lower torque...

anyhow must be normal for tacoma
