tundra brake's

so what all is required for a 2001 Tacoma to have tundra brakes?obviously rotors and calipers pads,but do you need to change any other hard parts?what are the best rotors and pads to use ect.tia

 

I would say the best rotors and pads are OEM Toyota parts. I just did the upgrade about a month ago. So much better! I bought rebuilt Tundra calipers at local auto parts house, trimmeded backing plate and drilled out end of banjo bolt.

I did this but went to the junkyard and grabbed rotors and the calipers off a truck.
How much did your spend? For me total cost was 170$ And what did you do with your old calipers and rotors, mine are just taking up space.

 

My total cost was about $450. I kept the rotors, possibly might try to put disc brakes on rear. I had to send calipers back for core of almost $100 per side and original was leaking. If I get 115k out of this set of brakes, like the original rotors and calipers. I will be happy!

 

I just got the Orginal rotors resurfaced and the calipers I just cleaned and painted.
Next time I do my brakes I'll get new calipers.

 

A lot of folks say they have to change the rim size. The tundras brakes aren't supposed to fit under the 15in. rims ?

 

If your doing the Tundra brake upgrade, you need to get Tundra brake rotors. They are thicker and a larger diameter.
To Aquatic Tacoma, Yes you need a larger wheel than a 15"!

 

I am currently buying parts for the TBU. Ive put out numerous calls to junk yards for Tundra/Sequias and had no luck. I think I am going with Rock Auto:

All Rockauto parts are from 2005 Tundra 4.7l V8.

Yes, I misunderstood! I'm new here, so didn't connect that you had found Tundra parts at junk yard. Here is how mine turned out!

I see you didn't go with new brake lines too. Next time I do my brakes I'll do steel lines around (group buy).

Definitely.
More power, substantial decreased chance of warping your rotors, substantially reduced brake fade...

 

Nice work! If you find the brakes squishy, get some steal braided lines. Most users found the stock lines didnt work too well with the larger calipers and brake feel was worse than stock.

The mod that I wanted to do this past winter was an upgrade to the suspension. Then I found a front caliper leaking ,so did the brake upgrade. Going to be getting the OME kit from Wheelers, so was planning to get there braided lines when I get the kit. Otherwise brakes were good before, but even better and smoother now. So glad I went with stock Toyota parts!

 

Will this work on a 6 lug 2WD?

 

Yes if you have +16" rims or wheel spacers that allow your rims to clear the larger calipers.
