Hey guys I have really been throwing around the idea of trading my double cab for an ext cab V6 manual that is worth around the same value as mine. I really love my truck but I hate that it is auto and I would love to have the extra bed space for camping and hauling stuff. I don't have a family and barely every take other people with me in the truck when I do drive it. I have a civic as a daily driver. Do you guys think I would be better off trying to find someone who will trade me or I am better of to sell my truck and buy an ext cab? The main thing I like about the idea of trading with someone is that fellow tacoma owners tend to take really good care of their trucks versus someone who bought it at an auction. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Here are a couple pics of my truck. Truck no longer has the TRD Beadlocks, it is on 3rd Gen 4R 5 stars.

I had a manual double cab, 2nd gen.
Thought I would love it, but ended up selling it.
First, the bed was too short.
Second, it was a six speed manual. First and reverse gears were so tall it was hard to get the clutch out on a hill or pulling an 1800 lb trailer. Backing the trailer was a bear, as reverse was so tall you would have to feather the clutch all the time.
I don't know if the 1st gen 5 speed manual is like the 2nd gen 6 speed, but if it is, I would stay with an auto.
Now I have a 1st gen, extra cab with an auto and it is a better fit for me. Realize that I love manuals, just not ones that are geared too high in first and reverse.

Ya this is the first double cab I have had and I really miss have a decent size bed. The first gen manuals are not like the 2nd gens. The only complaint was OD seemed too low but other than that I really liked it.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
Always better to sell if you have the time and patients. Trades dont give as much money and its easier to negotiate with cash in hand.

Your truck looks to be in immaculate condition. Should fetch a good price especially it being a DC.

Sell it. You will get a really good price for your double cab. I'm guessing but somewhere close to 12,000 is what they are fetching up here in Wisconsin. and buy an ext cab for right around 10,000. take the 2,000 and invest in making the truck exactly what you want. I was just at the dealer and they can't keep double cabs on the lot for more than a few hours. People want your truck. sell it.

I'm still kicking myself for paying 12k for my TRD DC. But, it was the best price around and was clean and had records. Comparable ext cab / 5 speeds were a few grand cheaper.

You would be better off selling it and then picking up the other truck. You'll either put some cash in your pocket or find a really clean/nice truck.

I wish I could trade for a DC in my area but finding someone who took care of their truck as well as I did mine may be the difficult part :(

btw no manual here either, I got auto cause it was my DD and I've dealt with highway/traffic for the past 10 yrs

on a positive note my girl is about to turn 120 here shortly :)

Wish you were local. I've debated trying to trade mine to try and get a DC in good condition.

Thanks for the advice guys. The only bad thing about selling it and buying another one is actually locating one that has been taken care of very well. I could probably get 13 for my truck around here considering the condition and having all of the maintenance records. I will probably hold on to it until I find a replacement. Thanks again guys

I would consider trading my ext cab manual for a DC auto, but i dont think my truck is worth as much as yours.. and i dont think yours has the "options" i would want to make the trade worht while.. cough* supercharger *cough!

Ya I know what you are saying. No superchargers for me on any Tacoma I get because I am not a fan of them. I had one on a previous Tacoma and I was not impressed. If I go forced induction it will definitely be a turbo set up.

Well guys I am going to look at 2 toyotas this weekend that are local so hopefully one of them works out.

The first one is a 1999 5 spd with 203k miles. The timing belt was done at 197k and a few other things. For having over 200k miles on it it looks to be in really good condition especially the interior. It's definitely going to need the suspension done since it's still on stock stuff. Here are some pics of the truck. The guy said the lowest he will take is 7k for the truck.

    61fa902211b2f27e2ca28aafbdcbe131_zpsa6d2_c192309c071a0cae16c7f0010b73627b95d04e7e.jpg65fb056a859b4313027813f3fe38f398_zpsc0fe_172a87ab7cb0e771995abdfbd08b9487bb66d5b2.jpg8e0d5cdced7070445d6b442d5b0c17f7_zps969d_bbd231f2016b9e65c3cf7ec6627cdafdca9f6190.jpg1ea9eb822fd3219a8ea9120fa14c8dc0_zpsc565_6155cfdc44355689d6973098800322f703a84811.jpgffaaa117c250cd4eb89aca633d9987d4_zps44d6_1652f9332993805c7b426a33ef0480cb38c09a0c.jpg

The other Toyota is a 99 4runner Highlander edition with 134k miles and is a 5 spd with an e locker. It has a toytec lift, 285 km2s, bronze konig off road wheels, and a few other mods. He said he also replaced all of the fluids, Upper and lower ball joints, CV Axles, and the timing belt and water pump were done at 118k miles. The guy is asking 9k obo.

Which one do you guys think might be the better buy?

    A better buy?

I thought the issue was getting the truck with the features you really wanted, which was a longer bed and a standard tranny. The 4runner has no bed at all.

IMHO, life is too short to spend big bucks on a vehicle that is not right for you. I spent 8 months looking, before I found 'the perfect' one for me 3 years ago. I spent more than I wanted, but it was worth it. I still smile whenever I look at it.

Complete OME kit w/ 881's and dakars. All-Pro Sliders, CB, HAM Radio and various other minor stuff.
I second that. I too spent more than "average" from a stealer but got exactly what I was looking for.

I also stay away from people who have lifted their vehicles or done other mods. Reason is simply that you never really know what they've done or where they've taken it.

The reason for the bigger bed is being able to sleep in the back mainly for camping and stuff which I can do in 4runner. Ya you are right about life being too short.

i agree that 4runner has no bed and the same amount of seats, you are better off with your truck... plus that is overpriced

I like that 4 runner. But then again I have a thing for black vehicles. If you like the modifications it looks good and only 2k more for 65k less miles seems like a good deal. That said I do think the 4runner is over priced a little but it might be worth it given the miles.

Edit: FWIW 2 1/2 years ago I paid 7k OTD for the wifes 01 with 167k.
