im new to TW and i was hoping yall could help me out. im about to start my first year of college this fall (forestry). i think i have been a responsible young adult because i save money however i can possible and i dont blow what little money i do have on stupid things. for that i want to treat myself to a newer Regular Cab 4x4 5spd tacoma 2012-14 model preferably.

what all can i expect from a truck like this?
how big is too big with the tires?
what mods will help me most? (im a avid hunter and outdoorsman)
    is the 2.7l enough motor?

If you would please answer some or all of my questions and fill free to tell me what i need to know. Thanks guys

I alway prefer the bigger engine. I would rather lose a MPG or two for more power

265s are more than big enough for normal off road

These trucks are more than capable, just invest in a good all terrain tire

    I enjoy the Duratracs

Some bilsteins, OME 885's, and an AAL.
265's will fit stock. And a few inches of lift 285's (33's) will fit. Truck becomes a little sluggish though. As far as the 2.7 being enough, I regularly pull trailers with mine. And it has no issues. You can expect decent gas milage with the 265's and the truck will run forever.

x2..Go with the 6cyl..Sounds like your usage is more off terrain and you probably will be running larger tires so MPG is not a top priority. I don't ever hear the V6 guys wishing they had bought the 4cyl. It's usually the other way around. I would also prefer at least an access cab for extra leg room and storage.

I would go with the V6 and access cab.

+1 for the V6 access cab.

If it's not really a people hauler, the access cab is perfect. You have room for anything you might need to bring with you (guns, bags, gear, people on occasion) and it doesn't affect the bed size as much as a double-cab. Plus you have room for a sound system if that's your thing. Infinitely customizable. Ok on gas (better than a lot of full-sizes, but not stellar in general). Plus it looks great. I think the single cabs look a little squished myself.

This. Cars will get banged up at college because other kids don't know how to drive or are coming back a little tipsy from the party and there goes your nice new shiny truck.

That being said a reliable set of wheels is very very awesome and a truck will get you lots of beer, and meals for helping people move.

Another thing to consider is insurance. Insurance costs ALOT for people under 25 years old, so if that's going to jack the cost of ownership up on your truck then I'd just get a beater and get through school.

Just get a truck that will work for the next 4 years like others have said. I had my car stolen once and crashed into every year I was in college. If I had a brand new vehicle I would have been very upset. Plus you can actually use an older truck to have some fun. Its not really a good idea to off road a brand new truck. Its just too risky.

If the price difference bothers you on a new go with a used... I got an 11 access 4x4 v6 with 14k for 23000
I also hunt and I used the small rear seats to store equipment I don't want in the bed...
