2007 tacoma off road questions

Hey Everybody,

i just want to start off by saying i am not a toyota guy, i own a 2011 jeep wrangler, but i have a few questions for my lazy friend who doesnt know how to search for stuff lol

He has a 2007 tacoma TRDoff road with the tow package. He was told that it already comes with a extra leaf in the rear, can anyone confirm this?

also he is looking to run 33's (285/70's) and already has a leveling kit. can he run the leveling kit and 33's without doing any trimming to the body?

if he cant do the above he has been looking at a 3" lift from either pro comp or OME. in the jeep world pro comp is pretty crappy. of the two what would you suggest? is there another kit that is on the cheaper side or in that price range that is comparable. i know ride is subjective but opinions are welcomed.

i wish i could look for him but he lives in canada just outside of vancouver so its a little far of a drive for me lol i will text and ask how many he has in the rear. do you happen to know what is the standard number of leafs are?

yea pro comp is harsh from my experience. i suggested the bilstein or toytec lift to him from what i have read. i have bilstein shocks on my jeep and they are great so i can only imagine that their coilover kit is nice as well.

 

Unlike a Heep our suspension lifts do not change the geometry of the trucks suspension so if he is offroading the same sized tires that fit stock will fit lifted.

Largest diameter tire he can fit with minimal modifications is a 255/85/16 pizza cutter on stock wheels and they make 285's look like wee little baby tires. They tuck under the fenders when flexed.

285's are wide and not practical IMHO. They are so wide you must chop frame and fenders to fit them in most cases.

 

he has 4 leafs in the rear it looks like.

how does a suspension lift not change your geometry but tires do?

He wants a lift anyway so im sure he will do 285/75r16's

yea i run 315/75r16's on my jeep with a 2.5" lift and i trimmed my fenders, for a LCG, so i dont rub at full flex so i know what you mean

 

neither do.

lift's don't change the suspension articulation. just because you put on a 3" lift doesn't mean your suspension will allow a 1-1/2" taller tire.

To keep this real simple........putting on a standard lift does NOT allow a larger tire.

and in Tacoma's standard lifts = less down travel so they tend to ride like shit in the woods or trails.

Right, a 3" lift is only good if you have the right shock length to accommodate the lift. You don't want to long of shocks otherwise you will just unseat your coils while flexing.

Now when you say standard lift you mean a budget boost/spacer lift right? If so why can't you get the spacers and some shock extensions to allow the proper down travel?

All the above is based off of some of my jeep knowledge so please correct me if I'm wrong.


Is there a complete 3" coilover kit from Bilstein or OME (or another company) that anyone would recommend for my friend?

 

How does pushing the wheel hub 3 inches down further from the wheel well not allow a larger tire?

5100's@1.75 and 265/75/16 Firestone destination AT in the pic, but I've installed an RCD lift since.

The wheel well is not getting any bigger.

Get big man tires and make a turn. You will rub something. Get tires big enough you may rip something out if not damage the tires.

 

Big man tires? Okay. The wheel well actually is bigger at the bottom vs the top. And the further down you push the hub from the top of the wheel well equals less amount of tire in the wheel well.

255/85's didn't fit my truck stock and they do now with a lift.

So to get this back on track, what 3" lift do you suggest for a 33" tire? Hemainly does DD with his truck. I guess you can say he does easy off roading since he is in construction so going from site to site on non paved roads.

 

If the amount of available uptravel stays the same then no. If you have 8 inches of available uptravel and a 4 inch lift, the starting point of the uptravel (the hub) is now 4 inches further a way from the point it was rubbing pre-lift.

For mostly DD the choice is easy... RCD lift. Its a 4" lift but is better fit for 33's and Daily driving.
-No rubbing with 33's.
-Stock CV angles (no diff vibes)
-No need to buy aftermarket UCA's
-No preloaded springs, smooth ride.

Is cutting the front crossmember required ?

 

He shouldn't get a spacer lift, it will ride like crap. I would recommend a Toytec coilover (eibach/bilstein) or an Old Man Emu coilover lift (885 coils would probably be best) if he wants a full 3". The only thing about a 3" is you will need new UCAs to get it back into alignment.

Plenty of people fit 33s with just 2.5". An easy affordable way to get that is just to buy height adjustable Bilstein 5100s and max them out at 2.5".

Yes you can run 33s. Yes they will rub. You just have to take off your front mud flaps, and trim plastic in the fender wells. You don't actually have to cut the fender on the outside like people who run 35s. You might also rub on the body mount. This isn't a huge deal unless you are really flexing your tires up into the wells. The cure for this is a cab mount chop where the body mount is cut skinnier and a new plate is welded back on. Your buddy shouldn't need to do that though from the looks of what he is doing with his truck.

Also, nice jeep man! My best friend has a jeep just like yours. Same bumper and winch too actually, haha. Man what I wouldn't for a solid front axle, haha
