I have a 2012 Tacoma 6 cylinder double cab with 35K miles. It's always had a tappet noise and I finally complained about it at the 30K service. The dealer checked it, the service attendant agreed that it was noisy and said they could check into it BUT if it wasn't a "mechanical" problem then it would cost me approximately $600 for them to have torn into the engine. It sounds like it's only one tappet and since I'd read so much on the TW forum about the lifter/tappet noise being "normal" I decided to let it ride.

Yesterday I took it in for the 35K service and again mentioned the noisy tappet. Again I got the "$600 cost to you if they don't find a problem" but this time I told 'em to fix it. I've run into damn few noise problems that weren't mechanical in nature and it would be worth it to me to have the noise eliminated even if it did cost me something.

Well, to make a long story short the dealer still has the truck, they're having to measure heights and replace shims and it isn't going to cost me a cent since it's warranty...life is good.

So...point of this post is Tacoma engines aren't "supposed" to be noisy no matter what your buddy, your neighbor or the Toyota dealer tells you. Make 'em fix it.:D

You seem pretty confident that the noise is going to be gone when you get it back. I wouldn't be so confident but that's just me. Just because they adjust something doesn't mean the noise will be gone, but who knows maybe your noise is something other than the normal taco tick. I worked for a toyota dealer from '05-'08 and these engines were ticking before they ever left the lot.

Hope it all works out though.

Sounds like the shim buckets were properly sized from the factory, if they are checking/replacing the shim buckets.

Keep in mind though, that the injectors and evap solenoid are still "loud" tickers.

By taking it in under warranty they've admitted the noise isn't normal. If it's still noisy when I get it back then it goes back...as simple as that.

So you will now have an engine that was pulled apart and put back together outside the manufactures controlled environment and not to all the required tq specs.
You do understand techs get paid on how FAST they get the work done, right?

Now I'm not saying the engine won't run just fine once their molestation is over but it will never be the same.

bunch of guys will jump on here and give their opinions, hell I'm one of them but only the guys who work back in the shop know what I'm saying is sad but true.

All these trucks tick, it's just what they do and the engines run forever. Good luck

Mine has ticked since I drove it off the lot. But after it warms up a little it is gone. I do not mind the little ticking for a few minutes.

You have solid hard lifters ( No hydraulics ) they are going to make noise even if they are properly Shimmed / Sized. It may be reduced somewhat, but there will be noise.

It will Never be as quiet as an engine with hydraulic lifters.

Hey guys, I race a vintage MG and build their engines...flat tappet. I know what valve noise sounds like and when they need adjusting/repair. If I can get them built and quiet in my garage then surely a "Toyota technician" can quiet an engine also.

I have always believed the "tick" is valve noise especially when I often hear that it calms down when the engine is warm.

If you get your tacoma engine to be tick free, it will be the first 2nd gen tacoma ever to have a quiet engine. lol

I see why you cannot hear the valve tappets. Look at that exhaust! :|

    Ha!

Post up an audio file so we can hear the Vintage MG.

I am also sure the Vintage MG engine uses a much higher viscosity oil with a high phosphorous content.

Solid roller lifters when properly cold and hot lashed are just as quiet as hydraulics- assuming these engines have solid rollers...
