the first thing you need to do is check if it has spark, and if it doesnt that needs to be your main concern. because that you KNOW. everything else is just a guess.
dont just go replacing the fuel pump without knowing you for sure need one or not.
dont waste money!

 

Looks like I was smart and kept my comprehensive insurance. I also get $30 per day for a rental car up to $900. I still have to talk to an adjuster, but it looks like all I'll have is a $500 deductible, as long as they don't total it.

So wait, you swapped ecu's. Did you reprogram your key to it? Remember, immobilizer. What I would do is try to read the new ecu via obd2 scanner. IF its functional than we can go from there. Then you'll need to check for fuel pump priming, if it isn't than you need to check ignition power to relay to pump, very tedious. If you're not up to the task than you'll need to take it to a mechanic because at this point you'll need to hunt down everything that would make the engine start, and I'm not talking about cranking. This means from key cylinder, to both ignition 1 and ignition 2 relays, to fuel pump and to the ecu. Ignition 1 and 2 go to different paths.

 

Thats not bad, just don't go taking the alternative route to get there faster, meaning going into more offroad paths.

Hopefully OP, the insurance will take care of it for you. Sadly though, they may total it out. Let's hope you can get it towed to a dealership and they can get it fixed with a few simple things. Remember to swap back in your original ECU!

 

I don't nearly have the kind of expertise to do all that. That's why I'm resorting to insurance. As long as they don't total it, all I'll end up paying is a $500 deductible.

I put all original equipment back in. That way I can probably return the ECU I bought or just sell it for close to the same price. They said they will take it to one of their inspectors to determine the repairability before they take it to a mechanic.

 

Chris, this is encouraging. Maybe if they total your truck, you can get a newer one to use as an over lander. Then do a buy back or get a cheap older one and make it into your beater truck, like what you were saying lastweek. Win. Win.

 

I've already been looking into the best overland vehicles. Funny thing is, Tacoma's are usually in the top three of any overland vehicle list. Maybe I'll buy your mini-Toyota

My opinion is that you should hope for a total. Water/flood damage gets totalled easily for a reason. Once electronics are submerged, the damage may not show up for some time, corrosion grows over time and you may end up chasing gremlins for the life of the truck.

 

We shall see. I wouldn't be too upset. I would probably do a buy back or whatever to keep the truck, get a new one, and transfer all my mods to the new one and part out everything I don't.

 

With hidden damages they will total it out. Electrical issues are a pain and require many hours of diagnose. There really is no alternative because after the electrical is resolved you'll need to resolve any issues that will arise from rust development, which will require body/frame work. Yeah its a high possibility.

 

Not to mention, every hour that engine sits without getting up to operating temperature, the bearings, rings, sleeves, and camshaft are getting a heavier and heavier layer of surface rust.

Electronics = Toast
Engine = Extremely shortened life... if it was not damaged in the initial flood.
Frame and body = mud and other organic material hidden in inaccessible places, organic material will decompose, generating heat and releasing acids that will promote corrosion.

Seems costly to buy it back just to save the mods unless the buy back cost is extremely low.

 

I buy salvaged Toyota trucks. Flood vehicles are always the cheapest vehicles to buy.

I want to thank you for not being afraid to start this thread. You know you are going to be paying a "stupidity" tax, yet you still carried on with the thread. Good on you. YYou learned from experience what you can not do with a Tacoma and many others have as well.
