Overhead Compass/Temp Fix

My warranty for that was over 20K ago, but the service manager said they still might replace it.

 

Just completed mine. Took 10 minutes. Well, actually about an hour cause my old soldering gun didn't work so I had to run to Lowes. Worked like a charm. Thanks OP.

Hey all, I just posted a video explaining how to perform a DIY dimmer mod to the overhead display. Using this mod, you can force full brightness to the display, ignoring the 'headlights on' dim signal. It is easy to do.

I pulled my compass/temp gauge out and the 510 resistor is completely MIA. Is it going to be easier to buy a new one or is there someone on the forums that can get the resistor and install it?

For future reference, I just called the local dealer. The T-SB-0051-09 is only covered while under the 36mo/30k mile warranty.

Out of warranty the cost quoted was $205 parts and labor before tax.

Half that price being the labor? They probably charge an hours worth of work for 5 minutes of their time.

 

Thanks for the write up. Very easy fix. Took about ten minutes. The resistor was just hanging off the board on one side. It was rather obvious what was wrong. It was like Toyota put in a spring loaded resistor so when the solder joint failed the resistor would pop off to indicate the problem. Thanks Toyota for thinking ahead ;-)

 

Mine just failed yesterday - getting out the soldering iron today.

 

Wow-amazing. Mine went out awhile back but I did not really care. I had some spare time so I did a search on the forum and realized this was a known issue. I put the OHM meter on them, all good. Ran the hot iron across the ends, problem fixed. I can not sing enough praise upon the great members who contribute to this forum and save poor souls like me hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Thanks again.
